With a 24” barrel Barnes says you can get 2900-2930ish with several powders. At 2900 fps, that puts you right at 1500 fpe at 400 yards at 5k feet elevation with the 140 gr. I’d shoot an elk at that range with the 7-08. Since the 120 gr ttsx at 3200 fps (with big game powder in my rifle) has outstanding accuracy and the same energy at that range with more speed to open up, I think I would just use it.

The 120 TTSX is a great bullet for elk out to 400 yards in the 7-08. Taken a few bulls with it quite handily.
