My memory as I recall what happened, and some more pics.--

I was a 20yr. old Engineman, standing Aft Aux. watch--

SSN571 boat Nautilus, my boat, my home, at the time was participating in was games 380 miles E. of Cape Hatteras. We had just made a torpedo run on the aircraft carrier Essex. We were successful, Commanding Off. decided to make another run, none of the surface ships had a clue as to where we were. We changed course the Essex changed course, Nautilus came up under the Essex, as you can see we sheared a substantial amount of the sail off, at the time 4 million dollars worth and 4mos. at Electric Boat in Groton Conn. We did not take on any water, nothing but a miracle, only one crewman was injured with a broken arm. That day, 95 submariners got lucky, so many things could have altered the outcome.
The last pic. is better day, I am 6th in line in front of the sail.
