One thing that will keep me from being the first wave of volunteers is our national experience with the Swine Flu vaccine program in the 1970s.

Gerald Ford was all for it, experts fearing the 1918 flu was gonna kill us all. They rushed the vaccine to market, knowing there was a possible link to Gillian-Barre Syndrome, and damn if a significant number of people didn’t get GBS. Program stopped after 25% of the US took the shot.

Lesson is that in a crisis, phoucers will miss or “overlook” safety concerns. First vaccine might not be the right one.
