All tires are a compromise, an open aggressive tread give better traction in mud, and snow, but wears faster. Soft tread has good traction on ice, and snow, but again wears faster. Of course open aggressive treads are louder.

Harder tread rubber wears well, but does not have much suction cup action on ice.

Steel studs are great on ice, but you can skate on a fast stop on dry paving.

Dry road braking is a big factor as well.
