Most popguns around here were probably made from elder. The chinaberry guns have to have a polished bore with a choke at the muzzle, so they were made with some kind of hardwood.
Most farmers in this area had their land broken up into small fields with fence rows and chinaberry trees came up on the fence rows acting as wind breaks. Chinaberry trees were everywhere. The fence rows have been cleared and the fields are huge now. You don't see many chinaberry trees anymore except around some of the old homesites.
