Today's liberals (Progressives and Marxists) generally reject traditional, natural-law based morality and seek to eliminate the consequences of violating natural law.
Progressives, especially, see things that remove some of the negative consequences of immoral behavior as making the behavior moral. For instance, a Progressive sees birth control as reversing the morality of fornication. A Marxist just wants to tear down traditional morality, consequences be damned. And so it goes for a number of subjects. A Progressive will see advances in computing, for instance, making it easier to track people and therefore the not only smart thing, but the right thing to do.
Progressives generally see themselves as being the smartest people in the room and think that if millions of people haven't been doing what the Progressive thinks is smart, then obviously the millions of people are dumber/racist/more evil than the Progressive. They never stop to think that there might be some compelling, if complicated, reasons why people do what they do or why a law is the way it is.
Generally, Progressives are smart, but extremely ignorant people who don't know what they don't know and therefore think they know it all.
