EVERY consumer pays all the various taxes on consumer products such as fuel and transportation taxes, excise taxes, sales taxes, etc. Taxation isn't the essential element here. The politicians realize they can give free schit to more than half the population, while promising even more free stuff, and thus secure their re-election. That is one of the reasons the Greeks understood that democracy is the second-worst form of government, second only to complete chaos.
The government should not have any power beyond securing the rights of the citizens. That is the reason laid out for the existence of the every government in this nation.
