I grew up with stories of my parents under Nazi occupation, and it always came down to being able to grow your own food, and keeping the fire in the stove. Stuff all got taken, as did young girls and young men (for different reasons). They kept their heads down, tried to keep some of their animals alive, and grew and stored what food they could. Few things were as valuable as a fresh egg or fresh butter.
