Perhaps he is in a blue state and disallowed from firearm ownership?
Or he recognizes, correctly, that guns aren't a talisman and cannot ensure his family is safe from a 24/7/365 mob likely to number in the hundreds that is supported by both government and private institutions.
Quite a few people here seem to think they are exactly that sort of talisman.
