Thanks for the detailed info John. I've been eyeing extra high Leupold rings thinking they may have enough material to machine the hooks for the AKAH claw system bases on my rifle. With a 1" objective scope it seems like I might be able to keep it low and still have barrel clearance to take it on and off. The Idea of putting claws on a modern base has a lot of merit. The rifle's original scope is an old Zeiss 4x with that heavy post type reticle favored at the time and is mounted quite high. A good friend has a mill and the skills to go with it, so this may be an interesting project, although I have too many of those already it seems.

I'll have to make time to post some pictures of an early 1900's era 9.3x72r x 20 Gauge German combination gun (SxS) my wife inherited recently. Gathering up the bits to get some loads started for that one.These posts of yours, catinthehat and Cascade are getting me inspired.
