When pumping gas, I pump with my left hand and my right hand is in my front pocket holding a Beretta Nano and my head is constantly scanning the area around me.
I'm similarly vigilant while pumping gas. I'm aware of my surroundings, and the position of my firearm. I also alter my position in relation to the hose based on the looks of who's around me, and their relative position. That hose being between you and an attacker would buy you some extra time.
