I have a 1979 model in .308 and have used it for hunting only and it has been a good gun. Simple, yet effective.
I have other rifles, too, but I still use my 788 as my main gun.
Even if it broke tomorrow, this gun owes me nothing. I mean... what did I pay for this gun 29 years ago? $150??
I've killed at least 15 bucks with it and have never missed or wounded a deer yet.
I took 2 shots with it this year. One hit the bulls eye when sighting it in and the other took a nice deer yet again.

I guess I don't understand some of the negative connotation of your review.
Spend $150 for a gun and have it perform flawlessly for 29 years and I'm supposed to have a complaint? LOL.
