Well, the Leupold had to be at max magnification for the B&C to work, which didn't help it (smaller exit pupil? I don't know). And, the Conquest has a 50mm objective. The Z did darken up noticeably at full power- it was best, for my eyes, at around 14x magnification, in very low light.
Didn't get an elk this year...
No sweat, Jeff, that's just how it goes some years.
Sounds like the Conquest works just fine in low light, even for a big target-style scope.
