I shot my first moose 45 years ago with a JC Higgins in 30-06. Dad had acquired it from a friend whose brother had used it to shoot his wife and then himself. I was an accurate rifle, and came with an old Weaver scope with a post and crosshair reticle, but Dad didn't like it so he stripped it back to irons. I always wished he had kept the rifle, but he traded it for a Savage 99C in 308.
