You need a big match so it can burn long enough to completely consume the phosphorus, sulphur, and wax from the lit end, and still have much match left, before you put the flame to a cigar.

On a similar topic I saw something in a movie years Ago...
Blow a little cigar smoke into a snifter of brandy ( already warmed by the hand) let it sit a few seconds, then inhale it through the nose.

I thought it looked good so I tried it.
