If I only used 30-06 for the past 20 years, I would have been able to afford a number of hunts around the continent, instead of a cabinet full of unused rifles.

True, no doubt.

Practical, no doubt.

But, so un-Loony... shocked

And, I didn't say boring. One can do a lot of creative stuff with the '06.

But, that compulsive Loony disorder afflicting so many here just won't allow such practical, sensible solutions.

On the fence here. Can't decide between a custom 30-06 Vs. 300 H&H. I have both a standard and magnum action. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Start with an upscale action with features such as a M70 type safety, CRF etc and put that Rem aside for a target rifle.

As to the 30-06 vrs the 300 H&H. Well I got a 300 HH in a pre 64 many years ago. I shot it and loaded for it and put it aside and never hunted with it.

Meanwhile I hunt with lighter, handier 30-06's.

So get a 300 if you can afford it but have a featherweight 06 ready and sighted in.

That old M70 300 H&H weighs 9 pounds 2 ounces with it's 3.5-10X Leupold, sling and 26" barrel.

Well said Phil.

I'm as guilty as the next gun geek of thinking the '06 is passe' at times, but it's actually the rifle, more than the cartridge that sets the "tone." A 1940's M70 would warm my heart in ways that a rack full of new warning on the barrel rifles never could...........while ALL chambered for the same old .30 Gov't.

With today's bullet and powder selections, there's nothing that a .30-06 won't do, and do well. Of course the same can be said for other old classics like the 7x57 and 6.5x55. The Super-Thirty is a great round too though, and it'd be my first choice for a long action build...........just because I could. smile

Should be done shortly and am currently trying to find some of the new Hornady 180gr GMX's.

Heading to Africa in June for a PG hunt and plan on using the 300 as a primary.
What will it weigh?

I do not know, will weigh it when I get it. Was going to do a post on it after load work up.

I did get to handle it before the cerakoting and it feels fantastic in the hands. Hoping to have it by the end of the week.
