model and chambering, makes the most sense for one rifle to hunt big game everything, anywhere, in the lower 48 for a man entering his 60s?
Hard to beat a Model 24 in .30-06 or .270 as the most practical rifle to hunt the lower-48. I'd go with the .30 bore and start planning trips.

That's not a NULA. It's a faux NULA. Did you read the listing? Once again, world class analysis like we have come to expect... New NULA's are 3600+...

I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

I have a few Nula rifles along with a muzzleloader and rimfire and if I had to pick one it would be one I dont have.....
A model 24 in 30-06 with a #2 taper barrel...for big game you can shoot 130 grain barnes and go up from there as needed and you have a wealth of factory ammo to choose from

While I like modern light SS rifles the NULA has a crude push feed bolt face and overall the rifles are homely. Here is their bolt NULA rifle These days the Kimber Montana's are good. You're so dense, gravity waves bend around your head.

I would go with the .284 Win if you are adamant about the "everything," but if I really didn't think I was going to shoot moose, I would drop down to a .260 Rem which would be more fun to shoot most days. This.

I bought one about a year and a half ago and it was right at $3K.

I'm just looking at Mel's website on the rifles pages and a quote over the phone...
Your year and a half is a long time ago...

A Model 24 in 30-06 a 5.25 lb (unscoped) rifle that is accurate and easy to carry gets my vote.

I was lucky to get a cheap "NULA" a very early Forbes rifle most likely built by Melvin (serial number "009") that 30-06 is my favorite of any gun I have used in 50 years hunting.
My second choice would be a Model 20 in 7mm-08.

If you are in the NULA market also check out Rifles Inc. I've only a sample of one but it is my favorite rifle of all time.

Your year and a half is a long time ago... Yep, seemed like every bit of eighteen months ago. The price he quoted me was actually below what was listed on the website then, could've been a slow period for him.

I have a 243, 7mm-08, 300WSM and a ML'er and long for a lefty 30-06 too. I've thought of tripping the 243 and 300WSM and ordering a 30-06 but just can't do it............

As someone well past 60, recoil is not a friend as you get older. Pick the cartridge with that in mind. Some tolerate recoil as they age, but many of us do not.....

When making the same choice a couple of years ago, I went with a Model 20 in 308. I use it on elk and deer.

Model 20, in .308 or 7-08. Using factory ammo pushes the scales to the .308.

OK, turned 60 in October... I realize the .308 makes sense, but the 7x57 keeps calling me... I suppose he builds them on the M24, not M20?
