Well been a while...

Finally, got it started and timed...what a pain that was, but once I figured out the issue was a breeze.

Brakes are done and the Mico Lock works great with no bleed off!

I did have to take off the fan and go with a pusher electric and had to redo my power steering and how I routed it.

Went to fix a gear oil leak on the transfer case....well crap looks like that is a rebuild! Since I have it out, I will convert to a 2 stick transfer case and if I can find a SM420 or SM465 that would be nice.

Going to order the gauges and electrical in the next couple of days...hope to have it on the road by the end of April! I may still make a July Rubicon run!

It sucks when things don't route they way we want them to don't it?

Out back i have a front axle out of a toy pickup for the landcrusier but before i even think about it i need to get the new engine ordered.

Know where one is but turning loose of the 4,000.00 for it is the hard part.

Keep knocking the checklist down one at a time and it will get done.

Just for my information - why a 2-stick transfer ?

The current single stick transfer case is 2h-4h-N-4L with a 2 stick, one stick is for Hi/Lo range and the other is for 2/4.

So the 2 stick gives me an option when crawling to be in 2 Lo, when my front wheels are not needed for the rocks.

Cool project. It does my heart good to know I'm just one of many who buy a beautiful hunk and then spends tons of money to improve it.

Just found this thread today. Since I have absolutely no mechanical expertise or aptitude this is pretty impressive stuff to me. Looking forward to the finished product.

I started out with a 44ford. to follow, a 42ford script, a 45willys, all military, then a 49cj2a, the a 53M38a1, a 10/72toyota fj40. It was cheaper to buy the things than just trying to get the parts.
I keep wishing i had a garage like you do to do it properly.
What broke the camels back was trying to get a t84 transmission to work in the 44. I had it going on the bench, but every time i stuck it in the jeep in 115degree heat, wouldn't work. I ended up buying a t90, and there it sits today.
That is a LOT of money, and a LOT of work to say the least.

Between my father and I we have done, 68 CJ5, 84 CJ7, 86 CJ7, 2-48 CJ2a, 46 CJ2a.

All of them were rock crawlers. I have no doubt this one will crawl well.

Lots of money yes, but still less than a new 4x4 side by side!

Grew up bouncing around in my Uncle's flat fender, then built a few Jeeps myself years back including a CJ5 V8 I was very successful racing on the east coast back in the late 70's.

Why go to all the work? We all know CJ5's rollover every time you go around a corner!

I have never done anything mechanical in my life so I always find these "rebuild threads" fascinating--I'm amazed at how much one person can know/do with a vehicle!

I have a '73 cj-5 in storage that I plan to go through one of these days. It's the last year of the straight windshield and tailgate I believe. The first year for the amc 304 v-8 motor.

Well, been slow going, but now that I have the ignition and carb figured out, will be able to piece it back together a little quicker. Still have to pull the transfercase and transmission. Waiting on the gauges to come in hopefully, they will arrive this week. Did some clean up on the headlights and will have to do a little cutting on the housing for the head lights.
