Public schools are in large part daycare centers. A place to watch schools so both parents can work so they can pay more taxes, so they can buy more schools, so they can work more, so they can pay more taxes. So they can buy more schools.

That being said it's a pretty impressive job our local teachers do. I'm fighting with our 8 year old right now trying to get him to do his school work and wondering how they got him this far. The kid will give a million pounds of fight to keep from doing an ounce of work.

Feeling way more respect for our teachers right now. Plus, many of our teachers here in Idaho are decent people. Most aren't marxist revolutionaries like in some states and they must live what they do because they sure don't do it for the money here in Idaho.

My son is a middle school math teacher in NH, they are open, teaching, assignments, grading, tests etc.

As for more home schooling? I htink it will go the other way, more parents gaining a bit of respect for teachers, parents are now seeing the work, trying to help etc.

Same here in rural NC. You have to love what you do because to go to college and work for 25 years to top out at $52,000 is insane. No way I would do it and what other profession tops out so low? Sure they have summers "off" but during the school year any of them that care spend way more than 8 hours per day and night doing their duties. Given the importance of what they do and how it affects our future, they are drastically underpaid. Teachers pay raises are currently on hold here due to legislators not being able to get anything passed. The Dem Gov wants to tie Medicaid expansion to the bill and the Repubs, thankfully will not cave to his demands.

UNCCGrad: Good post. I don't know why it is that teachers so often are singled out by the "I'm the Only One Who Deserves What I Earn" crowd. Teaching, like many other occupations, provides an important service. Like other occupations, it requires a certain skill set, aptitude, and training. Also like other occupations, there are those who are better at it than others, as well as those who put more into it than others.

In case you haven't noticed it by now, but the OP constantly has to complain about something. Just another unhappy person who is afraid to look inward to figure out why he's so unhappy and why his life didn't turn out like he dreamed it would.

I thought maybe people will see how easy it was. That we wouldn't have to send the kids to be indoctrinated .

You must be some proud of yourself. The teachers are probably working harder now trying to get education across to the kids at home but you want a refund that was paid for by your government job. What a piece of work.

Since when did anything paid for by taxes give the guy providing the funds his "money's worth"? I want some of whatever he's smoking! I retired from the public education system in 2011 after over 30 years of turning young folks into taxpaying citizens by teaching them trade skills. Some of my students from back then still call me up for advice on occasion.
LOL!

I don't disagree with that - half day in class for evaluation of previous work/ new instruction, then go home and do assigned work/study - another group comes in for the second half day for evaluation of previous work/new instruction, goes home and has the next morning for assigned work/study. Class sizes halved, better ratio achieved. In either case, the non-academic half of the day could be filled with extra-curricular activities and the evenings spent on assigned work/study if so desired.

In this part of Iowa the spend more time riding bus than in class. Perhaps they need a rolling version of the old country schools.

Teachers teaching on the buses?

Based on some of the spelling in your post, the taxpayers paid for some school services that were not rendered (at least not very well) back when you were in English class. Do they get a refund?

If on-line education was as good as classroom education, they'd have gone on-line 20 years ago.

It isn't.

Ok y’all what is the average in school days your teachers are contracted for? Here the average pay is 44,000 per school year contract of 178 days classroom instruction, 188 days total work time. 44K for 6 mos. work.
