Funny, that's where I had one of the worst steaks I've ever had.

Note: when cooking a Filet Minon rare, take it out of the freezer for a while before cooking it... nothing like a frozen center of red beef in an expensive steak.

Definitely, but if you read through the responses, you'll see that I was right this time.

I did....and believe you to be more wrong than right.....this time.

A smattering at best. grin

Could have been worse - they might have thawed it in the microwave.

The only chain steakhouses I have any experience with are Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn and Ruth's Chris. Outback ain't that great, don't go there anymore anyway because of their politics. Texas Roadhouse is okay, but, as someone else mentioned, it's too loud and the wrong kind of music. Longhorn we've always been happy at and if on the road and don't know the local, it's a go to. Ruth's Chris does a nice job, but wish they had a better wine selection. Locally, Hall's Chop House in Charleston SC is unbeatable. Everything is always perfect, drinks, food, wine, service and food. Of course, the wife and I can blow $300 to $400 for dinner...but it's way more than just food to eat.

Last night we had steak at home. We do that about every two weeks. Usually it's 2" thick USDA Prime ribeyes cooked over mesquite and a good bottle of wine...nothing else. I can cook a good steak, but the good chains, TRH, Longhorn, Ruth's Chris, have purchasing power and a lot of R and D to support what they're doing. They cook thousands of steaks a night. I can no more consistently out do them than I can, with my once every couple of weeks informal trip to the sporting clays course, outshoot the guy who lives five minutes away and shoots a thousand targets a week.

When Logan's first opened up around here 20-25 years ago, they had very good food for the price range they were in. Can't say that now. They are pretty much a place of last resort for me.

Yup, we have one in Portland and it is amazing how good all the meat is, but the steaks are the best I've ever had- next to the ones we cook in elk camp, that is....

Yet, one of the easiest to cook correctly... also a good cut when you're not that hungry.

I'm sure we all have favorite local spots and should support them that are arguably "the best". I can name a few around the country too that are fantastic.

To answer the question about Best National Chain, I always end up comparing everything to Ruth's Chris so that is my answer.

In Jacksonville, we have 2 Ruth's, counting the store at PVB. Anyway, both have been managed very well. The store in town has been one of the top performing Ruth's and lives up to its reputation. The menu is classic chophouse and I cant remember being let down by a meal at that location. I have entertained customers, friends, and family there many times and believe in that store.

A close 2nd is Capital Grill. Food is great. Their menu can be a touch (just a bit) more complex than Ruth's. I'm not knocking it; I just happen to like Ruth's straight forward concept slightly more. Both are close to a pick 'em but Ruth's has the location in our town.

Del Frisco's is awesome but I haven't been in them near as much as Ruth's. I cant remember a bad meal so have nothing but good things to say about them. If we had one in town, I would hit it up more but my experiences have been out of town.

3 Forks is good, just hasnt overly impressed me.

Smith and Wollensky has been good. I end up getting seafood there more, thus why I rate it behind Ruth's, Capital, and Del Friscos. Good and I like it, especially the downtown store in Boston.

Morton's has been hit and miss with me. We had one for 10 years or so and it had good food but the atmosphere was off compared to Ruth's and Captial. We just got Morton's back about 2 years ago and it's doing better in a new location.
