Nice. I love that big flat meplat. Shades of Elmer Keith. I never got into casting and am kinda old to start now. Of course, I guess I could find someone who casts and sells some once in a while and just order from them. That looks just like the jacketed ones for sale. Two feet long.

I might add that you may be the only person in captivity who produces a flat meplat 190 grain gas check in .308 caliber. Pretty rare company.

For the 303 Savage reloader, Barnes has recently added 30-30 load data to their web site for their Barnes Original 190 grain. I know many of us refer to 30-30 data when we are looking for 303 Savage load data. Some newer powders are listed. Here is a link; it;s on 2nd page.

An accurate 1895 RB with an ivory combo sight and a Lyman tang sight that shot 100yd groups under 1 1/2", once once a time, is the only 303 I have left in the Savage safe. Fifteen years later I don't know if I can hold that still anymore... Kept it for that very reason.

My 1895 round barrel, one of the last built by Marlin.

Why? I had it restored and it looks fantastic. Fun to shouder it and ponder how many times and where it has been shot in the past.

That was the first custom mold I designed and had Saeco make for me, almost 40 years ago now. I was young and dumb and consulted with Frank Marshall of the CBA for advice. I wanted a "woods thumper" cast bullet for the first Winchester 54 .30-30 I had back then and Frank was a big proponent of a 190 grain cast bullet in his .30-30 Savage 340 for bears over in the Blue Ridge. (He loaded his hunting ammo for that gun with a case full of old Surplus 4831, pretty much like H-4831 today. I have used 28.0 grains 3031 in .30-30 and .303 Savage for about 35 years now.) It turned out to be a darned accurate bullet in about every .30 rifle I've used it in. Most of my Springfields will cut cloverleafs with it. Out of a couple dozen .30 molds I have, that one would be the last to ever leave.

Thanks for the heads up and link, Keith. I still have yet to try any of those Barnes 190's. I'm afraid they'll out perform my 190 casts!!

Been thinking a 1899A or B would be about right.

Any 99 in 303, or my F if I had to choose. Though lately I've been thinking about building a 303 on an old Stevens 44 1/2. That one quite possibly might become my favorite "Savage" 303 should it come to fruition. Now to find the action.

Roy,

My favorite 1895/1899/99 to hunt with is my 99H V1-2. It's not much to look at with it's "fruit wood" stock set and non-factory sling swivels, but it will make little tiny groups (Lyman 29 1/2) at any distance I'm likely to try to kill something. I can't hunt deer here in Ohio with it, but coyotes, pigs, groundhogs and feral dogs tread at their risk...

It's also the lightest Savage rifle I own, by a few ounces. Nothing but hills here. Not nearly as grand as yours, but just as steep!

Merry Christmas to all!

Easy choice, I think it's the only one I have now? Sorry if you've seen the pic before. This is the rifle that brought me to the campfire and had people calling me Larry Root in disguise, just because I joined on April Fools Day. Any way, it doesn't fool around. This shot was with 190 Silvertips.

No, not the exact same mold. This was a custom job.

I have 90%+ H Barrel bands in 303 & 30 30 and have never fired them. Great handling rifles. Be nice to have a 250 & 300 in similar condition. Can't have them all but sure is fun looking for them. GW
