Ask the bighorn sheep how they like the mountain lion hunting ban. And who now has to manage the mountain lion population?

I can remember back when if you were hunting in the northwest corner of the state you could buy two bear tags for $2.00. Fill those tags and they'd GIVE you two more free. Fill those and get another two more. My how times change. That why does and spikes are off limits. IIRC, it was that the Sierra club had a lot of influence on that idiocy. Paul B.

Some would like to hunt the Black Bear to extinction as was done to the California Grizzly, the wolf and other species in the state. And while the population has been brought back slightly from its lows in the 80's and 90's, its nowhere near where it was historically.

Phil Hey Phil, How do you feel about restoring the buffalo to their historical numbers. Do you suppose there is still room in America for 60,000,000 free ranging buffalo?
I was thinking the other day how much I used to hate Bill Clinton. He was freaking George Washington compared to what they are now.

Phil CA hunters can't even fill the 1700 tag quota as it is...you really think black bears would get hunted to extinction? Stay in Southern CA please, we don't need your type up here.

Not hardly, California's population has grown by 100,000 from 2019 through 2020. and now is just about 375, 000 short of 40million.

shut your yap. you voted for this A San Francisco Democrat has introduced a bill that would ban black bear hunting in California, despite a bear population at its highest levels in decades and repeated conflicts with the wild animals in Lake Tahoe and other high-tourist areas
On Monday, state Sen. Scott Wiener introduced Senate Bill 252, “The Bear Protection Act” sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.
The bill would ban California’s sport hunting season that now allows for 1,700 bears killed in the fall and early winter. Under the bill, bears could still be killed under a permit to protect public safety, livestock and for scientific research. https://www.sacbee.com/news/califor...tK6AOrUADnl3iGOGYzUvPM1wLx-FBl1PwqjZ_7Rg This legislation is not based on science!Locally, around Lake Tahoe, bear populations have grown to some of the largest densities in the country, and bears have been aggressively breaking into vacation homes, and attacks on people happen from time to time.
The bill’s introduction comes as California’s statewide bear population has more than doubled in the past four decades. Black bears are not endangered. State officials estimate that in 1982, the statewide bear population was between 10,000 and 15,000 bears. The black bear population is now “conservatively estimated” to be between 30,000 and 40,000 animals, state officials say.
California’s limited bear-hunting season has had no impact on this statewide population growth.
In 2011, with bear populations growing, the state proposed increasing the state’s annual harvest quota to 2,000 bears, but the plan was scuttled after fierce opposition from the state’s influential cadre of environmentalists and animal rights activists. The next year, the state legislature banned hunting bears with hounds in a bill pushed by animal rights activists who called it barbaric. We have too many black bears and they should allow a spring season (not just fall season) and baiting.

Phil From KTLA “Officially, California added 21,200 people from July 1, 2019, to July 1, 2020, increasing the state’s population a paltry 0.05% to 39.78 million people — still by far the most of any state. But the bigger news from Wednesday’s new population estimate was that 135,600 more people left the state than moved here. It’s only the 12th time since 1900 the state has had a net migration loss, and the third largest ever recorded.” Bear hunting should be managed by biologists not ignorant voters. Btw: businesses and quality people are fleeing CA.

“ The consequences of no-sport harvest of mountain lions are less understood in California. High levels of mountain lion predation on small isolated populations of bighorn sheep (Wehausen 1996, Ernest et al. 2002) has resulted in Peninsular bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis cremnobates) and Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep (O. v. sierre) populations being listed as federally endangered populations.”

This legislation is not based on science! Of course not. It's being pushed by HSUS, one of the most radical animal rights groups in the country. They'll try to go around any science to achieve their nut case goals. Of course. It’s called “ballot-box biology” HSUS tried to lie and deceive their way into getting black bear baiting outlawed in Alaska some years ago. We were able to bear that ballot initiative with help from SCI and other groups.

Phil California spans roughly the same length as Philadelphia to Jacksonville Fl. Imagine an area like that's game and wildlife management decisions being managed by the urbanites of Philly. The Southern California urban people like you, Phil, dictating wildlife management in a state that ranges from 14,500 ft to 282 ft below sea level, with the widest variations of climate and ecosystems to be found anywhere in the world. Stunning arrogance and elitism compounded by urban stupidity. You appear to live 600 miles or so south of me, but you know what is best for me, classic urban elite. You liberal urban fools have driven your end of California to 3rd world dysfunctional schidthole in just 2 generations. Congratulations Phil, keep those brilliant ideas coming. This state needs to be split now.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

They did the same thing with mountain lions decades ago despite CA having a huge lion population and livestock losses due to lions. As a matter of fact CA will not even allow you to import a mountain lion skin from another state that you legally took it in. Look it up. Totally un enforceable, so a dumb ass law. But it is California. Actually it has been enforced. I suggest you look it up. CA classified the mountain lion as a special restricted animal and does NOT allow the importation of any LEGALLY hunted mountain lions regardless of where the cat was taken. That is the law and they do enforce it. The head of the CA Dept of Game was fired a few years ago for shooting a lion in a another state (Idaho I believe) even though he broke no laws in taking the cat.

I know some guys in Montana that wished they could trap grizzlies and transplant them in California. Yep. I have been saying that for years. Since they like them so much and want everyone else to deal with them the CA residents should be forced to except our problem bears.

Phil So you will be demanding your state try to get grizzlies from MT, and WY?
