I watched Red River a few days ago, ya, it was OK but back then using correct guns was not an issue. The beginning showed a wagon train in the 1850's, but they all wore Colt SAA, (not yet invented for another 20 years) and when attacked by Indians they used Trap Door Springfields again a gun not yet invented. At that point I turned it off.
As much as I like John Wayne, and am a huge fan of his movies, very rarely were they ever period correct as far as the kind of firearms that were used. But, then there have been very few movies made that ever were.
I think McQ and maybe the Shootist were his best for period correct firarms.
The worst was the Comancheros with Winchesters and SAA's being used in the 1840's
Open Range was definitely mentioned. One of the great modern Westerns. There was also a Quick and The Dead staring Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, Sharon Stone, and Leonardo DiCaprio. I liked it. Not sure it belongs in the top 20, though.
Seems I remember the one with Sam Elliot, too. I don't remember much about it, though.
Oh I can't name 10, but I'd say a couple of John Wayne flicks, The outlaw Jose Wales, Pale Rider, Unforgiven, Open Range, and the Hatfields and McCoys miniseries.
That's what comes to mind, presently.
Hatfields and McCoys was not a Western.

You guys missed "Across the wide Missouri" with Clark Gable! Trapper and Injun movie.
Actually a pretty good flick. I enjoy it when it reruns.

The more recently produced, the more likely the guns are period correct.
Thank the Guinea gun makers for that...
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Anyone else think The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance should be on that list?
I do, and I would add McKenna's Gold as well.
