Ive never used it in a Whelen, but I have shot some in my 223rem combination gun with 55gr and 60gr bullets. Both loadings shot very accurate for me. Hey welcome 84! I live in Oregon, but family roots are also in SE West Va.. I was born in Bluefield... Grandparents and my folks were raised in Monroe County, Grandma's side was from Raleigh County....family also in Greenbriar and Summers County.... I'm descended from Meadows and Lilly stock....which have been there as the first White folks to settle there... in what was Lillydale , before they flooded it with a reservoir around 1950.... I live in Summers county about 2 miles from Bluestone and hunt in Monroe County. Small world. Thanks for the welcome

DR,
84Mtn, If Whelen loads don't work out, I've got .223 and 45-70 in mind as backup alternatives. I might even consider the 45-70 option to be better. My load for it with 405 gr. Remingtons uses H335 which is accurate as hell but the fireball at low light resembles the muzzle blast of the USS Missouri's big guns. It sounds like you have found a great backup plan and having a plan B is always good. You mentioned H322 and that also is a great 223rem powder. I've seen some limited data listed with both H322 and AA2015 listed for 8x57 too so that might also be worth exploring.

I don't know if A2015 is going to be any better or even as good as the RL15 I normally use. The shop had a nice supply of it at a decent price and after coming home and looking in to it I said to myself, just buy it. It'll work for something I use.
I believe it will be a decent powder for 200 gr. bullets. The Nosler #8 gives a velocity of 2769 fps and Western's #8 gives 2798 fps using 200 gr. Hornady's, both with max. loads. For heavier bullets, RL15 and Varget will be better powders in the Whelen. You'll be hard pressed to find any powder better than RL15 (maybe AR Comp), but I'm sure you will make due with the AA 2015 you found. Its far better than being empty handed...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

bsa,
I'm well stocked on RL15. I've been using it over 20 years in various Whelen and .308 win. rifles. I simply bought A2015 to try and because it will work in other cartridges.
In today's state of affairs, it's never a bad idea to pick up loading supplies that can be used in multiple options. If it allows me to develop loads that work well and keeps me from burning up my favorites, all the better.

A2015 update,
I started this thread talking about using it for 35 Whelen. Well what has happened is a swerve. I started working on 45-70 first and RL7, which I've used in the past with 300gr. HPs didn't work very well with 405gr. SP. Everything I've read indicated A2015 could work for the 45-70.
Out of my H&R Handi rifle test loads ended up with an average of 1702 fps velocity and 1.5in. five shot groups @ 100 yds. with;
Win. brass WLR primers Rem. 405gr. SP 48.0gr. A2015
At my age and volume of use of this rifle/cartridge, I'm thinking 500 rounds I've loaded will cover my lifetime. Probably will have grandkids still using it when I'm done.

ended up picking up 4 of the eight pound jugs while it was still available...
last two rifle rounds I have been playing with, the Grendal and the 17 Fireball... both seem to work real well with 2015, right along with the 223, and 22.250...
since the 8 x 57, really looks like a big 223 case, I thought it should work well in that also...
so I loaded some up, using my favorite 8 mm bullet in it, the Speer 170 gr SMP...
was accurate in all three of these old Mausers that I have that were passed down to me from family members...

AA2015 is a sleepr in 358 Winchester with 200s & 225s. Less bulky than W748, measures easier than 3031, burns clean, gives top speeds with good accuracy in the 2 rifles I've tried it; an old Ruger 77R & a Shilen barreled M70. Yep, for sure. My 12 twist JES bored Pre-64 Fwt .358 Win likes 2015, also does good with RL-7, especially with lighter bullets. I've tried LT-32, but like RL-7 and 2015 better. 2015 works well in a number of rounds. With today's powder shortages, I think I'd have walked out of there with several cans. DF

DF,
I bought the five pounds the shop had. Having now become familiar with it's broad usage capabilities I'm a fan. It will be a powder I stock as I come across it.
I've enough left over to give it a try in the Whelen and load 100-140 loads for use if it works well.

I've burned up a pound now in my 6x45. It is working very well. Good stuff.

My Ruger 77 in 358 also loved 2015 back in the day when I had some.
