Rem, the edges are shiny, the flat black is what I'm wondering about.

oh it looked like metal. i think i know what you are talking about, not sure of the name. some kind of masonite-like sheeting with a hard coating. 50's era.

Years back, I watched a piece on making linoleum.

They skimmed of the skin off the top of huge vats of linseed oil, ground it, and pressed, and baked it.

Phenolic Resin. Sometimes referred to as Bakelite. Came in sheets, pre cursor to Formica.
