Coyote . No one hates running deer more than me. For many years I ran the 280AI with 140g ballistic tips. Typically 60 to 80 yard runs. Did a stint with the 300 WM with 180g Ballistic tips. Mixed bag between DRTs and 100 yard runs. Did the 270 WCF with a mono copper bullet called a Groove 113g EXP. Very effective. 20 yard run and alot of DRTs. Then Bob talked me into a 7mm Mashburn. 150g ballistic tips one deer did 100 yards second did 200.. Switched to the 168g Berger . Total horror show. Might be fine at 800 yards but at 250 yards it nuked. Biggest mess I ever saw. Went to the 26 Nosler 129g Accubond factory ammo. Avg. Say about a 20 yard run. I liked it a lot. Now running the 270 STW with a 130g TTSX. 3600 fps. Last year 377 yards DRT. This year 180 yards DRT. And when I say DRT. I mean DRT big time. For the 6.5x 300 I'd run the lightest TTSX or Hammer huunter bullet I could get to shoot and drive the ever liven snot out of it.

I'm getting a whiff of "It was going so fast it didn't have time to expand." Shot placement. I cannot stand looking for deer on places I cannot see 30 yards so I choose to lose 5# of mediocre meat. 243 or 6mm at the neck shoulder junction or higher in shoulder eliminates those rodeos, bigger cartridges/calibers work but just make more noise for the same drt results. Then again these Midwestern whitetails aren't near as tough as deer in other parts of the nation.

Sounds good and I agree the 6mms in the neck or shoulder are DRT. But let's say you get surprised and the best buck of your life is going flat out away from you, tic tock hes 300 yards out, and there you are with the 6mm in your hands..... . dave

That deer flat out going away is not nearly as "straight away" as you think, especially at 300. I must have missed the part where he was having issues with straight away shots on these deer. They are degradation tags and I am betting he has all of the time in the world to pull this shot off. Possibly even some off of the truck mirror or over the hood of the truck. Not saying that is the case, just a guess.

Ha. Have you ever read POAckleys handbook for shooters and reloaders? There's chapter on the 220 Swift. With Ackleys CE bullet they shot hundreds of animals. Lots of DRTs. Very effective. Just something about the speed they can't handle. dave

The 100s work but once again I don't see as many drt with them. YMMV. Same with frangible bullets in the larger cartridges/bores. I guess that's my point. For me there is no need for a sledge hammer to drive a tack when a tack hammer works the same with less fuss.

I built a 22/243 Middlestead. But didn't get it in the field for this season. It's capable of running 55g TTSXs at 4200. Least that's what my Chrono said. Just not ready . Perhaps next year. Kinda looking forward to it. dave

I think every caliber has its place. I bought that 6.5x300 because I wanted a dedicated deer rifle and possibly a few elk. I've only ever killed mulies and whitetails with it as of now. I wanted a 7 stw or a 257 stw but that brass is getting tough to find. Weatherby came out with this 6.5 hotrod and I thought it would be good. And it is. I am a huge fan of a 243 win as I call a ton of coyotes and it's my favorite caliber for song dogs. I have been that guy when a big deer walked out at 300 yards and all I had was my little 243. I got the deer but it took a follow up shot. Shot placement is key I get it. But I think with a cartridge such as a 6.5x300 you need a bullet to open up. I mean I deer is pretty resilient to bullets and astound me on how far they van go mortally wounded but that 6.5 has opened my eyes to power. I have killed a ton with a 6.5-06 and a good old 30-06 but they are just not the same. Not apples to apples. I had a 7 rum that shot 168 vlds and it was hammer time. Dropped 99 percent of deer. I like everything about that 6.5x300, I think it just needs light bullets for deer.

Also that 22-243 is a damn monster. Same with the swift. But man a 243 can run that little 75 grain vmax pretty darn fast. I don't figure a coyote would ever dodge a bullet. But I'm with you guys with those 2 calibers. Be cool to have a rifle with that stamped on the barrel. Yes, I'm that guy lol. I had a fast twist 22-250 that would shoot an 80 grain berger pretty good. As far as the 6.5x300, it's all in what your shooting at or feeding it I guess. Time for bullet testing!

Dave, you have me interested in that 270 stw. I'm not about fast twist and long bullets so much. I'm into putting a good shot on game and anchoring them. I bet a good 130 and a stiff charge of re-25 would make that sucker sing right along.

Sounds it. I've always wanted a .257 STW but I got this 6.5x300 instead. A .270 stw may be the next barrel. I've heard people say 6.5x300s only last about 7-800 rounds, but I don't know. I shoot it all the time. Now I may shoot it more.
