Makes sense to me. Like pounding dollars into the shape of a boomerang. It might come back.

I don't understand how you could shoot a .270 cal bullet down a .30 cal barrel and hope to have any accuracy. Now if you rebored a .243 or 22 hp I could understand. Are you talking about getting a .270 cal barrel made that would fit on to a .300 sav action ,then necking down .300 sav brass?

tbear, the 99G would be the most common takedown you'll find. Others would be the 99B, 99D, or 99F. I think we can eliminate a 99K from the project.

Hey guys, remember it is tbears money, and if he wants to put a new tube on it for another caliber, its his choice. I got no problem with it, he is keeping the original barrel correct, better than taking a nice 1899 H in 30-30 and turning it into a pig gun! I'm wandering...........sorry, not to name any names You know who you are. Les

Bear, If you get hold of Ackley reloading manual number 1 page 376 you will find something on this cartridge. In fact Roy Tripllett among others did this way back in 1945. Pay no regard to those putting this down as its a great choice, the 277 cal bullet balances almost perfectly to the case capacity of the 300. Even based on conservative figures of 2700fps you will have a great deer cartridge you could also look at the 7mm.
If you have a donor rifle go for it, and I think it would make a great set up on a take down. Back to my favorite dream of a 22-250, 250 savage and or 300sav/300/270 0r 300/7mm. on the one action
good luck Johno

Just re-remembered that the .270 Savage was 'invented' by Titus - found this reference.

lightfoot thanx for link as stated in that article a few different people are said to invent but no one seems to be positive on who was first.i'm not gonna gain nothing over a 270 win but it will be unique and not everyone will have one the work will probally start about july alot more research needs to be done smith's finding donor making a few cases up so smith or barrel maker can adjust and make everything properly

This is your quest but I think a .284 bore beats a .277 any day...
.284 Win or 7mm-08 would be my pick.
I've loaded and shot a boatload of .300 Savage and that short little neck looks like it would be tough to downsize while making longer at the same time.
Maybe I'm just getting old...

I would think the 270/308 would be a much better option, but that's just IMO...For that matter the .284 pretty much fills the same space...

270/308, 284, 7mm08.. none would work on a takedown. They'd all need the extended magazines of the 900,000+ serial number or the postmil receivers.
So if you wanted an extra barrel for a takedown, the 270 Savage isn't a bad answer.
Be kind of fun to wildcat a 284 Savage though.

An additional fecta, with no work involved, would be a takedown barrel in 250. But if you had a 250 barrel, why would you want any of the others.

Some thing to consider is that the rotor will not necessarily work like you might think, unless you have seen it done already, or someone knows that it can be done. I had catastrophic results when I tried to cycle 22-250 rounds in a .250 Rotor. Damn near shot my wife, and lost all respect for loading a gun in the house. some you you may remember the story! "Will a 300 Rotor Cycle a .270 round?" Better find out before you spend the bucks!

Swapping a rotor takes all of 5 minutes. If you gotta switch the barrel, assuming this is done with a takedown rifle, switch the rotor also!!
Mike...
All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<
