One last chime in on this topic. It is not any of you that I am trying to please - and I think most of you don't worry about what someone else thinks either - it is me that I want to please. One color scope make a rifle shoot better? NO, not because of color. Shine spook game? Maybe, but I have used gloss scopes and lots of old Browning, Sako deLux, and Weatherbys to kill lots of game. Add a highly finished shotgun for turkey to the list. They are supposed to be spooky. Could I have done even better with matt, camo, zebra stripe, and etc.? Perhaps.
The first camo shirt I ever had was given to me by the host for a dove sHoot. He insisted one had to have a camo outfit to kill doves. As a good guest, I wore the Tee shirt to humor him. When I was young, I used to slip out to the country for late afternoon dove shoots after work or school. My attire was usually a white shirt and either slacks or starched jeans. Sitting atop a pond dam, I never had trouble getting a limit, if the birds were flying. Now then, white does seem to spook deer, especially WT. It signals danger to the group.

My preferred color on rifles and scopes is any color that doesn't stand out too much. I don't care for shininess on my rifles or shotguns either.

Or how about a stainless rifle with a blued scope, But, what do you do when the rifle comes with stainless rings and you want to use a blued scope? I usually try to switch out the rings. Doesn't bother me in the least! I'm more interested in how well it works rather than what it looks like. I've got at least one like that and I don't think about it until a thread like this comes up.
There is no accounting for taste.

Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however, Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

I don't worry about it much either. I prefer matte scopes on most all rifles, and don't like silver ones period. I'm sure most rings could be de-glossed pretty easy if need be. Not so easy to go the other direction. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This pretty much sums up my preferences, too.

Why does the old Kink's song "He's a Dedicated Follower of Fashion" come to mind after reading this thread?

I'll match them if I can, but given that most rifles today are pretty friggin' ugly anyhow (ever see a really pretty synthetic stock, or a gear shifter bolt handle that exuded grace of form? ) I don't care if the rifle and scope match up in finish. Pretty much my mainstay today, but I'm under no illusion they are pretty. However, matte does normally match my boots and if you ever catch me rubbing a new pair on some rocks, I'm only trying to get them to match the scope. Those shiny shell cases however can be soooo embarrassing. Addition: Part of the "beauty" of the synthetic stock is you don't have to care that you don't care.
