If it wasn't for Chittenden County and the dumbasses in Montpelier, Vermont would be considered conservative. Real Vermonters just want to work and live their lives. It is the flatlander imports that go straight to politics. Most of them have made their fortunes elsewhere and now want to rule us.

The tax will be based on GPS mileage so unhooking the odometer or going to bigger tires won't do you any good. The black boxes going into cars are going to have GPS capability, that's what'll make this tax possible and that's why it's gaining traction now. State governments didn't really have the ability to monitor it until now. Oregon is talking about the same thing. How do the GPS locate satellites? They must have an antenna that could have problems.

I keep hearing how there are people fighting and dying for my freedom and I should appreciate the freedom they have attained for me with their blood. Than I read a thread like this and I say to myself stupid really does hurt.

People will still buy them. People care more about driving a new reliable car than they do about being tracked everywhere they go.
I'm not that sure about that.. I think most people really don't want all this gov't tracking and will resist.. At least, I hope so.. Most people won't keep repairing old cars just to avoid the GPS boxes. Vehicles are a requirement in modern day America, you basically can't live a normal life without one. There might be a few diehards that's keep wrenching on old jalopies to stay away from the black boxes, but in 20 years 98% of the cars on the road will have been built with the GPS boxes installed and will be able to be tracked at will by the govt. One other thing - what about, say, after laws like these are passed, that any time a vehicle 'pre-law' goes into the shop for any repair that the shop is forced by the gov't to install a new 'post-law' box? Must that be disclosed? Oh, and how are they gonna work with motorcycles that don't have any 'black box'?? I still think people will get around this crap one way or the other - and very possibly by using fuel caddies and cans..

Are they going to make the car stop running if the GPS tracker is "broken"?

Just like wood stoves. Pre-box vehicles will be uninsurable at some point down the road. Perhaps an exemption for QQ plates, which will then be heavily taxed.
Your wood stoves and 1978 F-150's will be uninsurable, so unless your state doesnt require insurance, you will essentially be mandated to buying new cars with the BOX.
Give it a few years. If I am wrong, I'll buy you a box of .22rf.
I wont be wrong.

I am sure a new "subsidy" will be offered based upon income & need. Gov loves subsidies... lets you control the market more easily and buys votes on someone else's dime. I bet I aint wrong.

I would find that antenna (usually about the size of nickel or dime) and put a piece of adhesive aluminum foil on top. Viola! No satellite reception. Another question: How and how often will the data be transferred to the state? Automatically uplinked via satellite, downloads around gas stations, or an annual inspection? Once again, big brother will likely be watching you. Me thinks folks should start some exchanges with their representatives and mention the option of electing someone else next go around. When an issue is a deal breaker let them know it.

That won't do a thing for you if your taxed on your mileage. Ok, so how then, will you get gas for your 'lawn mower'?? No black box on those, is there?? (get it?)

Don't heavier vehicles cause more damage to the roads than lighter vehicles? Therefore, should they not pay more to make up for the damage they cause?
I have heard civil engineers tell me that the interstates would last forever if only cars and light trucks operated on them.
Therefore, using the logic that the user should pay, it should be a combination of GVW and mileage to reflect true user cost allocation.

The current road tax is based on fuel consumption, right?
So, as people move over to hybrids and 30mpg vehicles, they pay less taxes to maintain the roads they drive on, compared to other vehicles.

All the wonderful changes I've read about occurring in the northeast of late makes me think that perhaps I have been overly harsh on my opinions of Yankeeland.
