Yep, BS in Sociology, BS in Psychology and Associate Degree in Retail Management from NYU.

Frankly, I left the universities feeling that I was not an educated person, so I spent fully thirty more years trying to educate myself. All I learned was that there is so much to know and life is very short.

I never needed the education or the degrees for my business.

I'm decent in math but no expert and I like to show our flight students different ways they can use Trig in some situations. Ex Brother in Law and a great guy, went to college for music. Then played trombone in some symphony. Smart guy who leaned Russian along the way and the government grabbed him to interpret intercepted messages. He would translate and report directly to the Pentagon.

Did that for quite a few years and finally had enough. Married a girl from Maryland whose family has a truck farm. Which is what he does now.

T,

Are you suggesting that engineering students are all hard partying drunks soon as they close their fluid mechanics textbooks??
UW (Wyoming) wildlife management, got a job turning wrenches. Collage was the biggest waste of 5 years of my life. Other than meeting my wife I gained no knowledge, 0 experience, and wasted several thousand dollars. There were so many guys in my field of study it took two years to get a spot in one class. Then all the cultural, brainwashing BS was almost nauseating, why did I need to learn about African American studies to get a degree in deer accounting? I hope my boys want to have real, usefull jobs, like plumbers or welder, none of this university BS.

Now I keep getting all this crap wanting me to donate to their alumni crap, didn't they steal enough money and give me enough empty promises for one life time?

Rant off, I just really hate higher education.

College girls couldn't even keep me in school. Left after a time. All I wanted to do was go to work. Started my first business at 23, sold the business and house at 35 and traveled the western US for a year.
Then started over, broke, thanks to an ex-wife! Been building back slowly.

Choices?
Yeah, there's big ones in life. Choose wisely young men. Most of the worst decisions involve women. The best ones can be with or w/o a woman in the picture. Think that one over.

I'm saying the two engineering students I partied with, one I went to highschool with and we're still good friends. The other I went to grade school, high school and later college with (he transferred to UW-O for MIS studies) and we're still friends.

I'd say those two were good party guys who happened to be studying engineering, not necessarily partying engineers if that makes sense.

My friend who went to Marquette happens to be female and I spend a lot of time in her dorm area at Schroeder hall. Was a great place to be.

I generally REALLY like Milwaukee as a town.

My favorites were always Jeff Stanton, McGrath and Doug Henry. Jeff Emig was good too.

I remember watching Bradshaw a lot before I got into it. First ride was a 1980 CR 125 Elsinore that was a rocket, went from that to an 87 CR125 and then a 93 KX125

When I drove by there last year it was. The guy that owns it runs a surplus military vehicle lot, with jeeps and a bunch of old deuce and a half's and I think a Humvee or three and other odds and ends. If it's the same fellow I'm thinking of he was in the 101st Airborne in Vietnam.

To Rob's previous question - I was the "computer guy" for May Trucking in Payette, then when they moved all operations to Salem, OR I went to N.A.C.A trucking, then when they went out of business I worked for Catholic Health Initiatives which owned Holy Rosary hospital in Ontario and Mercy Medical in Nampa, among a bunch of others. Then CHI consolidated all of their IT operations in Littleton, CO, so I had to move to Boise to find work.

A paper degree is no gurantee of an education. I know plenty of people without a paper degree that are highly educated, know plenty with a degree that I consider poorly educated.

Graduated over 20 years ago with my BS and while I now can appreciate the value of a complete education (non core classes), I didn't at the time I was in school and honestly I'd say my education in those areas occured after I'd graduated.

I would be highly suprised if any college student formed their moral foundation based on a class in ethics, and doubt any student lacking ethics before taking such a class gained any in the process of taking the class. Psycology, sure knowing who's the crazy one, who's likely to stab you in the back and who's going to take credit for your work is a valuable skill to have in the workplace, but I didn't gain those skills in psych class.

University of Maine at Fort Kent
BS in Environmental Science

Looking back, I really wish I had attended the maritime academy like I wanted to.

Certainly won't debate how "educated" one gets or doesn't get from a college education, particularly some of the general ed requirements, but I did notice some trends.

In those areas directly related to my field of study I thought the courses were certainly useful and even interesting - botany, soil science, dendrology, etc. Sometimes I wished they'd tell us just why they were useful since a lot of times you wondered why you were studying the stuff.

But what I really noted was the difference in the professors who had some professional background vs. those who had been in college since their freshman year. Those who had engaged in business or "the real world" were able to impart some real practical knowledge or as I mentioned above, could relate to us the importance or the application of what we were studying. Those that hadn't, treated everything as a dry academic subject and incidentally were usually, not always but usually, the biggest pricks for grading or just overall treatment of their students.

Like much of life, college is what you make it.
Montana State, BS in 1983 and another in 86 after taking two years in the post-Reagan world of ditch digging. Basically added marketing to my management degree. Was a quarter short in both American History and Economics but the economy was improving.
Still haven't used my degree to actually get a job, but it helps.

I'm a DD--double dropout, both from high school and college. Though I probably do have enough credits for an associate (2-year) degree from the U. of Montana in biology.

What Jim in Idaho said about continuing education if correct. All a formal education does is provide the basics. Both my parents had Ph.D's, but continued to learn throughout their lives. I wasn't cut our for formal education--high school bored the snot out of me, and after my sophomore years I decided to go out and see the world for a while.

Started college at 24 and took whatever seemed interesting. Dropped out of college when I had the choice of writing a history term paper or writing my first book for actual money. Money won--but haven't stopped learning.

Being schooled is not the same as being learned. Being learned is the goal.

Sounds like you knew the difference between bullschit and beef tenderloin. And, I know you are a devoted self educator. I'm not saying degrees do not matter, but their absence does not equal being ignorant.

There is going to be a big higher education shakeout in the near future and schools offering expensive degrees in fluffy bullschitt are going to go by the boards. People are starting to know the difference between an education and expensive used toilet paper.
Colleges and Universities are pricing themselves out of business. 40 Grand a year is average....NH gives no sweet instate discount to home slices either...no broad based taxes...no money for education...equals the 3rd highest instate tuition in the land....

I am staring at about 40G's a year to start for my son in the fall...and I thought the 5G's per I got bagged for in the early 80's was an ass raping! Sonofabitch!

***** that 40 for my son is out of state too...[bleep] NH!

Cleaning out a bunch of boxes I have saved over the years ( being divorced from the bitch from Hell.. in one of the more wacko liberal counties in the nation.. to CYA...) and found paperwork battling the Dept of Education over student loans...

I had to pay my student loans off twice... did it first time in the early 1980s in full.. and then in the late 90s. the Dept of Ed harassed me again, and demanded that I show them the receipt from the early 1980s when I paid them off... of which I didn't keep.. as who thought the Dept of Ed would try to harass me again, 15 years later...

We negotiated that figure out second time...

Fist time I paid off my student loans of $3500.

second time we negotiated for $1250...

considering the amounts vs today's tuition... I really don't have much to complain about in ratio...

I'm sure you heard of this girl in college, that is paying her tuition by working as a porn star because her parents can't afford to pay. Makes her parents proud ?
You want to know why college is so expensive ? Look at the pay of teachers and ADMINISTRAITORS. Kollege presidents make as much as some CEO's ?!
College is unaffordable for working class stiffs. Why go and listen to a bunch of BS from liberal douchbhaggs?
I admire just a couple of Universities, one that I've heard about, it's in Southern Michigan - Heritage University that prides itself on teaching the Constitution to every student; the other is Franciscan University that teaches Religion mainly.
You can keep all those sports mills that glorify and prepare thugs for professional franchises that millions of Americans waste their time in front of the boob tube getting stupider and making them richer.
It might be cheaper if they got "Liberals" out of "liberal education" and replaced it with Conservative education?

"Small Private College", that names a brilliant marketing strategy on their part if ya ask me grin

For my own part I went to SUNY Geneseo, didn't know anything about college, neither did my family, chose it because my cousin had gone there. Got there and found it was 70% female grin

Incredibly, I left there to finish my B.S. at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (90% male at the time, quite a let-down crazy ). BS Forest Biology/Entomology '79

Worked in the field for a few months, quickly got tired of looking at trees. Skipped out to New Mexico after a failed romance, did day labor for nearly a year. From there went to the Peace Corps, wanted to go to the Phillipines, so did everybody else, ended up in West Africa. Three years in the West African sticks; teacher and vaccination team member. It rocked, we had a military coup and everything.

Came back, got rehired by the forestry school. Left a year later for Texas A&M, thought to get a degree in Agriculture and take it back overseas. Ag research turned out to be excruciatingly boring, but I hate to quit anything so stuck it out through three seasons of field research, plus another 30 hours of free tuition for courses needed to teach all HS sciences, all while living in a shack on a deer lease and living on a paltry graduate teaching assistant stipend (fortunately, I could afford a motorcycle). Egad! The women were awesome. MS Entomology '89.

Wanted to go and teach in inner-city Hell, came to San Antonio to chase Mexican girls. Married one, and found that this place is so durned friendly that the San Antonio version of inner-city Hell is lukewarm at best grin Twenty-five years and counting now.

Biggest regret: I did the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Program (??) at Quantico two summers in college, was cleared for aviation. Seemed to me back them tho that killing folks was serious business and that I might not always agree with the CinC, so opted for the Peace Corps for my "combat" experience instead. If I had it to do over I coulda done all the above AND put in four years in the military, enlisted would have been fine, long as it was something difficult.

Yep, my older brother lived there at the time. I was broke, he was loaded. grin Fished the Channel Islands, chased shows at the Arlington Theater (GT and the Destroyers, John Sebastian, James Brown and others), played on State Street crazy , drank at the Elephant Bar and wrapped it up with tacos the morning after at Rose Cafe. A bowl of chili and a beer on the return to SLO via Cold Spring Tavern on 154 was killer. When I retire I will go back and do that routine once more, at least. Short of the biotch of the engineering school crunch, life (and future wife) was grand. Used to shoot in pin matches with Aaron Hogue in Atascadero and still have a pair of his Dad's original grips. I remember watching Aaron hand checker grips back then. I had a job offer to work at Diablo Canyon and thought, man that's dangerous schit. Instead I went to work in a refinery where a "boom" occured three weeks later...

University of Alabama, Huntsville
'79-'80, Electrical Engineering, while working full time and going to night school. Went to work for a Gov't contractor in Huntsville, AL. They picked up my school tab and redirected things and I got Engineering Certifications in Nuclear Environmental Qualification Test Engineering and Seismic Test Engineering in 1981.

Went to work for NASA in 1984 and they sent me back to school and I got additional Engineering Certifications in Flight Electrical Systems (NASA's version of Electrical Engineering), Flight Hardware Engineering (NASA's version of Aerospace Engineering), Life Support Systems, and Command & Data Management Systems. It didn't matter to NASA if you already had a PHD in Engineering - to work in some positions you HAD to take and pass their courses. Then went through the process to be approved as a Mission Control Console Engineer. I had a great career with NASA and the Army Missile Command, and with the exception of a few notable incidents, I would have paid them to get to do what I did.

Went to a bunch of Colleges, even got a couple of degrees.
Masters of music from North Texas University.
B.Med from Angelo State University.
Have hours from;
West Texas State
Midwestern State
Navarro Jr. College and probably a couple more that I was too drunk to remember.

It has turned out well. I still don't know what I want to do with my life (despite what I've been doing for 26 years) but I have a good job I couldn't have gotten without the degree and I have choices open to me I wouldn't have without the degree.

A degree isn't a guarantee. Not having one isn't a guarantee, either. Having one just improves your odds a very great deal ... but they're still "odds."

The way I look at a degree is that it shows an employer you have the ability to learn how to do the job in whatever field you gained the degree, but the degree in and of itself does not mean you have any job skills in whatever field you go into.

The funny thing is even though I have a BSME I've never really worked as a mechanical engineer and the one class that could be said to be helpful was an EE class, circuits. But I'd taken an electronics class in high school which had already given me the understanding of basic circuits and ohms law.

In my time at my current college, I've had one professor that was obviously left. She was incredibly professional about it, it NEVER came up in class but she and I would talk quite a bit out of class. Good looking and my age so it was natural.

I am not a lefty and it was obvious where I lay in the class and she graded me very fairly and made me a better writer in the process. I had 2 classes with her, she even offered to write me a letter of recommendation for grad school - when that comes.

My other instructors have been rather right leaning, particularly my Human Resources Management instructor and my Macroeconomics professor too.

Most of the students are older, returning adults. Out of all of them I can identify only 2 commies, the rest have been rather conservative.

A few people have noted that college wasn't/isn't worth is. I guess it depends on the school, but typically I would disagree with the sentiment.

My college roommates/neighbors remain to this day my closest friends. We were all in each other's weddings and we get together twice a year. Once in early summer at the beach and once in the fall for a hunting trip. No exceptions; all 10 of us.

Could the education be a bit more applicable? Yes, of course. But the people you meet and "out of class" living/decisions makes for a a great 4 years. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I can't speak to the liberal nature of things; Davidson was much more conservative than other colleges/universities.

As do many on here, I have the luxury of having a degreed job that still gets me outside and my boots muddy from time to time. Although each year I head toward more and more desk time as I manage more and engineer less.

Personally, I think we're in the middle of a real shift in the "standard" way to get post-high school education. Not sure how many other Mike Rowe readers/followers are out there, but he consistently makes great points about the American worker and blue collar jobs being dismissed.

With the state of the recent economy, there is a glut of people with degrees they haven't used for years. But a person just blindly adding themselves to that pool isn't a recipe for success for most young folks these days. Ridiculous college costs, education debt, and schools pricing themselves into irrelevance are worth their own conversation.

There are some real opportunities in trades or jobs that seem like "trade" work that 95% of the country is pretty quick to just write off. I'm always curious what advice other parents are giving their teens.

Haven't read the entire thread, but I think Superdave hit the nail on the head. Was just talking to my youngest son last night. Both he and his wife did 6 years as officers in the AF. His wife is now in med school at the Mayo Clinic. Both really smart kids. She's looking at getting into dermatology - really good pay and manageable work hours. Son Chris never even went through pilot testing while at the AF Academy - thought that life was counterintuitive to starting a family.

Point is, there needs to be a balance between work and life and your education and job choice/path influences that heavily.

I did both my degrees (BA - Wayland Baptist U at and a Masters - Univ of OK) while on active duty in the Air Force. Got a Master's Certificate and Project Management Professional certification.

I think the happiest guys in life are those who work in a highly sought after technical field, by the hour, or salary + overtime.

I tried it a few times.

,..actually put together a pretty nice cumulative GPA after I decided to be serious about it.

But I decided to start kickin' around machine shops along the way to make pocket money, and got bit by the Bridgeport bug.

That,...and the fact that the people I met working in the machine shops seemed to have a lot more in common with me than the people I met in college.

No regrets.

I didn't get rich,..but I learned how to operate a lot of fun toys.

Given my disposition and interests, I don't think a college degree could have made me any happier.
