I was recently given several boxes of ammo and dies for a 25-06. My first inclination was to give them to my son in law but then I thought that this is a perfect excuse to buy a rifle. I own a couple of 243's and a very accurate 7mm Rem Mag but nothing in between so this would fill a gap. One of these days I want to hunt antelope, deer and coyotes here are good targets but the 243 probably coves that. Do I need a 25-06?

In my budget there is a Howa and a TC Venture on gunbroker right now and I have a lonely 3-9x40 Conquest in the closet - any good advice appreciated.

The 25-06 is something I looked at a few years ago before I owned dies and ammo. It looks like the 308 of quarter bores, practical and efficient not terribly exciting. Ive only shot one and it was pleasant and accurate but I didn't want to run out and buy one.

It would be nice to hear that they are fantastic underrated guns and that it would be foolish to keep going through life wiithout owning one.

Nothing you can do with a 25-06 that the 243 does just as well if not better.

A .25-06 has traditionally been one of the best choices for a dual-purpose rifle (light varminting to deer).

Longer reach than your .243, less recoil than your 7mm RM. A decade ago I was at a gunshow where I sold a shot-out Savage 110e .22-50 and was leaving to go to Sportsman's Warehouse to buy a .25-06 when I literally bumped into a guy with a .257 Roberts for sale. Bought the .257 Roberts for a great price and it has been my favorite rifle ever since and lots of p-dogs and coyotes have met their maker because of it. Daughters love to shoot it and two have taken their first big game animals (antelope) with it - as has a nephew. Have taken some antelope with it myself.

A few years back I met a man and his 13-14 year-old daughter while elk hunting. She had taken a very nice bull elk and mulie buck with a .25-06 and 117g bullets, both one-shot affairs.

If I didn't have the .257 Roberts I would have a .25-06 and, like you, I already have a .243 and a 7mm RM.

Don't let anyone talk you out of the 25-06 because you already have a 243. Is there some overlap? Sure, but where the 25-06 out classes the 243 is when it comes to shooting heavy bullets at higher velocities. Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I'm talking hunting bullets, i.e-120 Partition, 115 TSX, etc.(not target bullets from an 8 twist 243!) On the other end, the 06 will sling a 75 or 80gr bullet at close to 3700 fps, which is an absolute hammer on varmits. Fact is, at practical hunting ranges under 400 yards, the 06 will put more energy on the target than a 243. Also, if you don't handload the 25-06 has an even greater advantage.

All that being said, if you buy the 25-06 and don't like it, you can always have it re-barreled to a 6-06 with a fast twist. It's about the easiest wildcat conversion on the planet from a 25-06 donor. All you need are dies. You'll already have the brass and a gun that'll feed the rounds like butter. Not to mention a cartridge capable of some wayyyy out there capabilities utilizing the heavy, high BC, 6MM bullets.

The 25/06 with a 120 grain bullet is real close to a 130 in a 270 win. On the other end a 100 bullet in the 25/06 exceeds the 243 buy several 100 fps. Hasbeen

I'm trying the 80ttsx in my 25/06 this yr. Figured I would try it for both deer and coyotes. It has done fine on two small deer, one was at just a hair under 300yds and the other at about 150yds. No dogs yet

My first centerfire bolt action rifle was a Remington 700 BDL 25-06. With it I shot many woodchucks and some deer. Some years later I sold it and bought a 243. The 243 was nearly as effective on varmints, but a less powerful big game rifle. The 120 grain bullet at 3,100 fps in the 25-06 brought it close to a 270 in power. However, noise and muzzle blast are correspondingly greater.

Here in the northeast I really don't miss the 25-06 - I have a 257 Roberts and two 250-3000s!

I heartily recommend the 25-06. It's a great - and very accurate - round.

I get 3300+ fps with 100g Barnes TSX out of my Tikka 695. I have a buddy that swears by the 110g NAB in his. Hear great things about the 100g NBT and Hornady 100g SP too.

Of course you need a 25-06, what a silly question. It is a bit of an overbore cartridge though, I think it would probably appreciate a 24" barrel.

Since you have a 243, you don't need a 25-06, but if you want one, you should buy one, no other justification is required.

OF COURSE you do! I currently have 2 in my stable (along with 3-243's). By many folk's standards both barrels are 'shot out' with one having more than 3000 rounds through it and the other over 2000 rounds down it's pipe. But both still print itty-bitty groups with the 110 AB.
I used one of them to take my first two elk way back when. Both DRT shots with the 120 partition. I also used one of them to take my longest shot on a game animal - 657 yards with a 120 gr Speer BT.
Numerous coyotes and coy-dogs have fallen to them using either the aforementioned Speer bullet or a 100 gr load.
By reloading for it, you can really tailor make rounds for just about any use.
The light recoil with a 22" barreled rifle is the stuff that let's you spend an entire day at the range really getting to know your new rifle! Heck, one of them holds my 'best target ever' ranking (.497 outside to outside/ .240 inside measurement) to this date. Only rivaled by my 6.5 Sweede's .33 group.
Accurate, light recoil, easy to load for, plenty of factory fodder, great brass availability (you can make it from 270 brass)lots of great hunting bullets, what other reason could you need to go get another rifle? Besides, that conquest is going to feel like you don't like her!

Pretty much sums it up nicely. Buy one its a great cartridge for smacking deer as far as most people have any reason to shoot.

.25-06 is a great caliber. Comparing it to a .243 is like comparing a Chesapeake to a Lab.

I can recall years ago, at the original Dick's Clothing and Sporting Goods (on Court Street in Binghampton, when they were a great LGS, before they went "big box") the kid behind the gun counter trying to sell an older guy a No. 1 Ruger in .25-06. "This is a great road hunting gun," he said, gushing with enthusiasm, "with this rifle you can kill a deer as far away as you can see it." I was fairly young myself, at the time, but old enough to know the kid was FOS.

The biggest reason for buying a 25-06 is so you can say you've got a quarter bore. I've got a 243..... meh, I've got a quarter bore..... hmmmm.

It's based on a 1906 case, can shoot 75gr varmint loads or 120gr partitions, 110gr Accubonds around 3200fps. Prairie dogs to elk, people been using them since the 60's I believe, and most guys that have them seem to love them, not to mention they're suitable for men, women, and children. If it were me, I'd get one.

In addition to those obvious truths, there are some good BC's out there now for the quarter bore, making it even better than it was 20-30 years ago. Don't impede it with a short bbl, get a 24-26" version.

Ok I'm convinced that the gift of ammunition dies and bullets is a sign that means that I need a 25-06. What clearer sign than my wife saying do you want that rifle as a Christmas present.

Whittaker's has a Howa for under $350 as does gunbroker and a TC venture for the same price. I've shot both and would lean towards the Howa unfortunately both are 22" barrels but either makes a nice walking Varmint rifle or deer gun.

I like them better than any other budget rifles from Savage and don't know anything about a Mossberg Patriots.

Anything I'm missing or just buy the Howa?

Assumin' 1.75" sight height(6x MQ in the saddle) and a 250yd zero. That bullet drops 13.4" at 400yds,drifts even more than that in a 10mph full value at 14.6" and arrives the scene at 2221fps. 600yds is 57.4" drop,36.7" drift and 1753fps. 1000yds is 313" drop,129" drift and 1101fps.

A "lowly" 22" 700 243Win will squirt a 105 Hornie HPBT at 3050fps and when zero'd same,do the followin'. Drifts CONSIDERABLY less at 3.7"(think percentages) and arrives the 250yd line only 14 fhuqking fps slower. At 400yds it drops less than halfa fhuqking inch more,drifts but 9.8" and arrives better than 125fps faster. Down at the 600yd line,it drops 2.5" less,drifts over a foot less at 23.6" and arrives better than 275fps faster at 2032fps. The 1000yd line do the Quarterbore's ZERO fhuqking favors,as the ittty-bitty 243Win Factory Rifle drops over 5 FEET less at 251" and drifts 4 FEET less at 76.2" and "only" arrives the scene 388fps faster.

The rifle is better balanced,better handling,lesser weight,lesser length,recoils less,is cheaper to shoot,not as loud and will reliably out-Agg same too...if only for fhuqking starters. Hint.

The 25-06 is better on game such as deer and antelope than the 243 or 6mm. I think with a heavily constructed bullet or perhaps a Nosler partition at 120 grains it would be OK for elk too, very similar to the 270 with 130 grain bullets.

If only varmints were what you were going after the 6mm or 243 would do as well.

I've had 6mm's and 243's since the late 50's. I like them a lot. The 25-06 is just a little more everything.

I shot a couple of deer this year with 25-06 100 grain Hornady's. Instant drop on the deer. I think I'd prefer a heavier bullet though. I think it was a little too much. The problem probably was due to the close range -- I shot them at about 30 yards. (and yes there was no hold over needed)

But the intellectual argument from Big Stick is compelling.

Both my son and daughter prefer the 243 so they typically grab both of mine for hunting season and casual shooting.

I probably won't share the 25-06, likely won't shoot it past 500 yards at anything but a coyote and likely won't even put a 1,000 rounds through it in my lifetime. So most of your observations don't apply to my use but interesting info. The old Conquest has been used to kill a pile of deer and elk when it was on my 7 RM longest shot at 513 on a big boar with 150 grain TTSX so it should still be OK on a 25-06.

All this from the guy who once told us that the 257WM was FAR superior to the 264WM all because of the magnificent 100gr Barnes.

I'm impatiently waiting for Whittaker's to get their share of the non-cataloged RAR-Ps in 25-06.

I strongly dislike the Hogue stocks that come on the Howa 1500s, so when I buy a Howa 1500, I have to factor in the additional cost of changing out the stocks. The least expensive option is to find a current production V2 stock for between $50 and $100. That bump in cost makes the Howa 1500s within about $100 of the V2s and the V2s have 24" barrels.

For what it's worth I took my 25-06 that I got "because it was there" out this year for the first time in the woods - 2 shots, 2 deer, no tracking, no wasted meat. I've used a 6mm and 30-06 in the past, so I knew the 25-06 would do just fine, but I was impressed with it's simple effectiveness.

I would not choose a "carbine" barrel (22"); there are a lot of 24" and some 26" available, much better for this overbore ctg. And, don't let the above rant-post cause you to despair--a quick check shows that Hornady and Nosler offer BC's of .39 to .45.

Not sure what your budget is but you might look at a Weatherby Vanguard if you're liking the Howa. Vanguards are made by Howa for Weatherby and I believe they come with a 24" barrel as well.

I got to say this has been an interesting read. I no longer reload. I sold my 25/06 in a M77 a few years back and had shot a 270 for about 15 yrs. because I liked my little Ruger 77UL in that caliber (still do). But, when I read the reviews on the little Marlin in the 25/06, I grabbed one and haven't looked back. I've noticed that the 14 or 15 deer I've killed with it the last 5 or 6 years didn't notice the BC of the bullet (120 gr. Core-Lokts), they weren't able to tell the bullet wasn't travelling as fast because it was a 22" barrel, in fact most of them didn't notice much of anything because most expired pretty much instantly.

In fairness and full disclosure, I own an old flatbolt M77 in a 243 but have never hunted with it. But, I have hunted with my BIL for over 40 yrs and up until 2 yrs. ago, he hunted with a 243. I have trailed and tracked enough deer he has shot with little blood to show for it to know that if I were to shoot the 243 I would definitely try to shoot him high in the shoulder. I guess what I am saying is, I am not smart enough to figure out how much a bullet will drift, sink, and curve; all I know is when I pull the trigger on the little Marlin something has always died-quickly. And that, to me, is what is important if I am getting a gun for hunting.

Don't obsess over 22". 24" or 26". My .257 Roberts is a 22" and it does just fine.

Anyone that tells you the .25-06 isn't worth your time is someone you should ignore, same as if they argue the .300 WBY is the best choice for elk for everyone or that the earth is flat.

My budget is as little as I can spend for a decent accurate rifle that is pretty low these days compared to several years ago. Since the wife wants to give it to me that is even more important that she believes rifles are affordable. I have a 3-9 Conquest and Talley's that fit either the TC or Howa sitting in the reloading room.

Antelope at 400 is the benchmark of required accuracy. I have a 1900 vintage 30-30 and Dad's old 06 that would struggle any other center fire I own will do that easily.

I have an older Vanguard in 300 Wby and like it very much since I put a Timney in it a few years ago. Would prefer not to need to do that again.

I have a B78 in .25-06 that is the most accurate rifle I have owned. Using 117gr. SST bullets it is very effective on Mule deer and Whitetails. Most shots out to 300 yards are DRT affairs. I trust the rifle to get the job done and it has never let me down. It is a very versatile cartridge.

I have had several of the .243 and .25-06.. Rebarreled my last .243 to a .300 Savage.. For me the .25-06 is one of my three favorite rounds.. Go for it..

Specneeds-as I said, I have one of the little Marlins chambered in the 25/06 and I can't say anything bad about it. I have seen them in the used gun racks around here for about 275. I didn't give but 300 for mine new a few years ago. Put Weaver rings on it, a Vortex Viper 2x7 and haven't had to change zero since I first sighted it in 6 or 7 yrs. ago. The trigger is about as good as it gets for a $300 gun, in fact it is nice. Whatever you end up with in that caliber, I suspect you will satisfied. Good luck whichever way you go.

You are correct I only average 3060 out of the old tang safety 7. It was made in 1976 and I bought it new in 1977. It got some work done glass bedding, trigger job and a custom muzzle brake. Since then it will pretty regularly place 3 shots at 100 yards that you can cover with a dime. The son in law's rifle got the same mods and a mercury recoil reducer from the same smith and is very accurate as well. Both of the rifles have 20+ Deer and elk in the freezer.

But they are hunting rifles not 1,000 yard match guns. One day we shot at a 1000 yard range and the 7 using a 3-9 duplex Conquest took 3 shots to hit the 18" gong at 1K with holdover and Kentucky windage so it can hit stuff out there but I'll never shoot at an animal that far away so BC really is a non issue. The 25-06 will likely not ever shoot targets past 600 even fooling around. lf it will hold antelope vitals at 400 it will be good to go.

If it hasn't already been suggested keep an eye out or post in the classifieds for a Winchester XTR Sporter.

I had a 25-06 in a remington 700bdl before they stopped chambering their rifles for it. I loved the caliber. Shot the 87 grain nosler ballistic tips lights out and was hell on prarie dogs and coyotes. Also never shot a deer with it that went very far. Great caliber, easy to load for, and fun to shoot. Good accuracy as well. The major conn is that there are mot many high bc offerings for this caliber. It will not be a great long range cartridge, but I regularly shot it out to 600. Also be aware that factory twist rates do not lend it to shoot the berger 115's with full stability.

Overall I loved it though.

There's not a damn thing wrong with a .25-06 at any normal range...but it does burn more powder, recoil more (not that it kicks bad at all with a stock that fits) and barks more than your 243.

These are all .25-06/110 accubomb kills, but I'll be damned if any other normal round/bullet combo wouldn't have done just as well, given the same shot placement.

This is my only 25-06. I haven't put a scope on this gun yet. It was a Christmas present to myself last year. It was from the Bill Stoeker gun auction last year. It is an 1917 enfield in a Bishop stock and has a douglas #3 contour match barrel that was put together by Glen Gregory. Glen Gregory was a shopkeeper and amateur gunsmith from Tanana Alaska but he made really nice guns. I got it for $250 out the door. It has a very sweet canjar trigger that breaks like glass. It is the complete opposite of what Stick likes and is a heavier rifle at about 9 lbs but its nice and when I do put a scope on it- probably a Burris with turrets it should be a very nice caribou rifle.

A 25-06 Brass Case is very good for necking down to 6mm-06, you can do it in one pass in a 6-06 sizer die. The 25-06 Brass Case to buy is Remington, I've been having good luck with those. grin

If someone wants to gun a 25-06 buy it and don't come here to an open forum for an excuse and not expect polarized opinions. I've owned four in the past. Shot many head of deer, black bear and all sorts of vermin. I've sold every one of them too. Simple fact is there is better bullets north and south of the 25-06. Much better. I'm down to two rifles. A 280 AI and a 30-06'. I keep the 30-'06 around for nostalgia and the 280 AI is my workhorse and is fed only 162gr A-max's. For anything I plan to hunt it will hammer it from 0-1,000 yds. If I plan on hunting grizzly interior or coastal I will borrow a .458 WM and give Phil a call. Anything else I have a perfect one gun battery.
I simply check the numbers and find the best BC in the best caliber and found the sweet spot with the 7mm, 162 A-max and contrary to advertising it DOES work on game. Once my last box is gone I'm going to give the 175 gr ELD-X a run. A .689 G1 BC is hard to beat in anything sub .50 cal without getting beat up by recoil. And one can only wonder what the 180 gr 7mm ELD will do. Just my take.

I will admit I dont know anything about the long range shooting/hunting game ...but with all the conversation you guys are having I have to ask why do bullets matter so much if you know how much windage and yardage to dial into your scope via a range finder or what ever else you may use to hit your target...I mean as long as it has enough energy to kill what your shooting at does it really matter...obviously it would be better to have a flatter trajectory but a dead critter is a dead critter isnt it

It's not so much the elevation, it's the wind that gets ya.

High B.C. bullets also carry their energy better at long range.

As has been pointed out a .243 105 vld carries more energy and velocity at long range than a 100gr or 120gr. .25 cal. bullet.

A 25-06 is great for Texas hunting. You hardly ever see a deer over 200lbs.

Therefore a smaller diameter bullet that is better designed will out perform a bigger bullet that is halfassed designed bullet. Your benefit is big gun smack down farther out without getting your butt kicked by big gun recoil, weight or appetite for powder. Does it really matter and will any game animal know the difference? No. But it's fun to get the most out of a gun as possible sometimes.

At the 1000yd line it gobbled up the 410fps 25-06 advantage in muzzle velocity and surpasses it by 477fps at that distance,for an effective total velocity swing of 887fps.

The 6.5 makes more "energy" from the 100yd line to however far you wish to shame the 25-06. It catches 25-06 drop at 700yds and drops less than it,to however far you wish to shame it. While drop is a breeze to calculate ala LRF and good turrets,the tidbit is still interesting.

Main thing is,the Creed' drifts far less in the wind,arrives the scene with more "Oooomph",has a higher impact velocity and recoils less,while being quieter to boot.

When it comes right down to it, if you paid attention to what Stick says, (not necessarily how he says it ), you could save yourselves a lot of time and ammo. Whatever tests you may want to do with bullets, powders, cartridges, actions, barrels, and scopes he has probably already done may times and is glad to report what he has found. But he obviously loves the harassment and responses he gets from the weak kneed among us. The entertainment value is beyond description, something like a train wreck- you just can't look away no matter how hard you try..... And it had become apparent many of you enjoy being his target "audience" because you just keep participating in the contests.

If you don't care about our image as hunters you're a fool... it's not the anti's, there's no hope for them. It's the vast majority of the undecided that see a photo like that, circulated by the anti's, that will rightfully be repulsed. Hunting isn't a right, it's a privilege that can disappear. I started this off with a real question about a 25-06 and what use you guys put yours to if you had one and what reasonably priced rifle you would suggest since the wife was paying for it as a Christmas gift. It needed to perform minute of pronghorn vitals at 400 yards as a specification if it was going to be useful.

For those of you who think a rifle needs an 800-1,000 yard bullet to be worthy of consideration - for my uses it doesn't.

The usage parameters haven't changed, my request for information didn't change, Stick didn't really change much either - his stuff is mildly entertaining for a few seconds then I just skip by and don't usually waste my time reading subsequent posts because he never really cares about giving good advice just likes to see insults in print and describing how he is the oracle of shooting - He's not but it is a free country he can type to his hearts content.

Thanks to the folks who answered, I bought the Howa, it arrives on Tuesday, I'm putting the 3.5-10 Meopta Meopro on it.

To the crowd that have their own axe to grind, isn't it great to have somewhere to share your ideas? I'd rather have the good suggestions and answers that I asked for but I'll never get tired of cool pics of dead stuff from Africa or people's individual viewpoints so it was at least entertaining. If I shoot a nice antelope with it - it would be my first so I'll post it here too.

Sticks comments are the highlight of my day usually, easier to bait than a bear with tape worm.

For what it's worth, I love the 25-06 too. It'll do what you need it to and do it very well. To hear some of these guys talk, it'll bounce bullets off a prairie dog hyde but somehow it has and will continue to account for thousands of critters of all shapes and sizes.

Apparently, it's like the fruit fly that doesn't know it's not supposed to be able to fly according to the engineers and mathematicians, yet does some pretty fancy flying anyway. Enjoy your new rifle and forget about the bull $chyte.

I'm betting you've never stood beside one of those giant splinters. Takes more than a little skill and work to put one of those on the ground properly so it is still worth some money at the mill. For a Sitka, that is a pretty good poke. Some of the places we have hunted, but not often, there are Doug firs laying on the ground from wind storms that are that big and some a bit bigger, but close to 300 feet long. Got tired of climbing over them to find elk so stopped hunting those units for a while- at least until the loggers get in there and salvage what they can. With environmentalists involved, that may happen in my lifetime....

If you don't have a quarter bore you might be gay, and the -06 is a good place to start. When you learn to really shoot well, you can step down to more elegant cartridges...of the same caliber. I took a shortcut?

Other than you could have had a 270 or a 243! The 25 calibers just never moved me except maybe a 250 Savage in a M99.

Well hell, it is a free country and all. I don't much care what people shoot. Around Paul? I used to get short range deer/elk tags there when a friend of mine ran the high desert farm.

He's between Acequia and Rupert...about 12-15 miles east of Paul. There's no short range weapon deer tag...archery only. I used to hunt it when it was a general archery tag, but not anymore.

It's hard to see but here is a 3 shot group from my 25-06. Kiss find pressure and butt rock on dude's

The other splashy were from my ray gun. With 300 grn .814 g1 kids toys.

Headed out coyote hunting the other morning, 5 bulls crossed the road in front of me on Highway 24. One was a solid 6x6. The short range weapon season was on, but they were on the wrong side of the highway and on private land anyhow (and I didn't have a tag).

The highway is the border, not the tracks, but I know what you're getting at. Everyone refers to the border as "the tracks". Some BIG bulls come off that desert just to the north, but it has been discovered and the tag is next to impossible to get these days. The general short range tag is AWESOME, if you can find someone willing to let you hunt.
