So I have an itch that I have been wanting to scratch for a while and the fix is the following...

Kimber Mnt Accent - 280 Ackley w/ a SWFA 3-9X

Idea is a mountain rifle/backpack rifle that could be used in longer range when needed (6-700 yards max for me)

Could i do any worse?
Rifle - 5 pounds/5oz
Scope - 19 oz
Rings - 2-3oz

Puts me at 6 pounds 11-12oz...not too shabby

Sounds good, if you get one that shoots. Lots of bad reports on Kimber rifles.. Seems like there are more bad ones than good. Good luck.

The odds are that you'll get a Kimber that shoots just as well as anything else. The problem is finding shooters who can shoot a rifle that light accurately.

I have one in 308. With Leupold VX-2, 3-9X40 on it in Talley lightweights it is still a hair under 6 lbs. Like most Kimbers it shoots great if I do my part. Not the rifles fault, but I tend to shoot some other rifles in the 7-7.5 lb range better. I don't seem to shoot anything over 8 lbs any better than the 7.5 lb rifles.

You're looking at about 3/4 lb more than my rifle, almost 7 lbs. I think it'll be fine.

Is there a reason you would go with the 280 AI? Brass is more expensive than 270 or 30/06? Just curious?

Im not a 30/06 guy and have no interest in owning one so that's out. I would be fine with the 270 as that has always been my go to round, just thought the 280 ackley would offer a better selection of lower drag, longer range bullets.

The setup is fine as long as it shoots and you can shoot it. The concept of an ultra-light and long range don't go well together. In reference to long range this would be considered ultra-light...imho.

SWFA SS 3-9x42hd...

I don't want to make this a dedicated LR rig, but if I needed to reach out for a sheep or goat, I want to be able to dial in and reach out to say 5-600 yards and dial it in then back out. I feel that 5-600 yards is just to long to trust to a bdc reticle and just hold over.

The Leupold VX6/VX6HD in 3-18x44 with CDS, zero locks on both turrets, and illumination clocks in at 19.2 oz. It's what I'm putting on my 308 mountain Ascent (if it ever comes in). Just a thought.

I've offered to buy those "terrible shooters" in alibers I'm interested in many times on this forum for a fair price for a "terrible non-shooting rifle" and the owners seem to never want to get rid of them, or they want to sell at "as new in box" prices. Think about it... I put my money where others mouths are and they wouldn't follow through. It tells your the story on it's own.

Light rifles like the montanas, adirondacks, and mountain ascents have some kick even in calibers like 308, they also are designed to kill critters in rough conditions after being toted for a long time. They aren't benchrest guns, and tehy aren't built to choot tiny groups. But with good technique and patience at the bench and a good ammo combination they willl shoot 1" 5-shot groups alll day long. It just might take you all day to let the barrel cool between shots.

All 6 of my Kimbers shoot MOA or better, and most of them have pretty low power scopes. I've got new production, guns and guns dating abck to 2004 in both 84M, 84L and 8400 (short action) Actions. They all weigh less than other guns designed to do the same thing, and they bite a little bit on the back end, but they work perfectly for my needs in their intended direction.

For 600-700 yard shots you need more scope power wise.
The Kimber is plenty accurate enough if you follow the BRAD tune-up protocol.
The big unknown is your ability to shoot well.
Actually I think 600-700 yards is just to far. Learn how to stalk.

How much game or how many targets have you shot at 600+ yards with a 9x scope my friend? It's really hard to make blanket statements like you have made, especially to experienced riflemen. 600-700 yards is a chip shot for lots of folks. Come hunt coues deer in the AZ Backcountry and you'll love the ability to potentially shoot that far.

Have you ever wanted to take an animal that was 600+ yards out and there was literally no topographical way to get closer unless you spook them into the next county and then have to pass because it's 300 yards out of range but conditions were perfect?

I'll simply say that I suspect you hunt in country back East for the most part. Where do you do most of your hunting?

I was thinking of getting a kimber ascent in 7mm or 300wm at one point but decided not to. I just don't have much use for such a gun since I don't take such long shots at animals and I don't really shoot many magnums.

In fact the only magnum I have now is a few 375HH rifles which are just for bear stuff and because I like them. 99% of my hunting happens with 308, 06 or a 270.

I have that setup with about 80 rounds through it I'll sell you for $2000 shipped and insured.

I can't speak for kimber rifles, as I've not used any. But that 3-9SS sounds perfect for what you want to do. The more I use mine the more impressed I am with it. It's tough, dials correctly, and returns to zero. The Milquad reticle is extremely user friendly and useful. I just put mine on a 308, had it dialed in in 4 shots. Checked 250 yard zero, 500 yards, 700 yards, then to 1100 yards. They were all on. Can't ask for more.

Now I've only shot a dozen or quite a few more.... But ULA/NULA's are light as well, correct....? Wonder why you don't hear about them not shooting good.... Nor do the same people that have bad shooting Kimbers because they "don't know how to shoot light rifles" have any problems shooting the exact guns once they get them rebarreled...


Kimber has an awesome package with the Montana/Ascent /etc, but their QC sucks.

To the OP - I'd also consider a plain Jain Montana. My 270 84L weighs 6.5 lbs with scope, my 308 a bit over 6. It's up to you on $ spent vs how many ounces to save.

I also agree with your cartridge choice. I've been a fan of the 280 since the early 80s. Tough to beat a good 150-160 gr 0.284 bullet. I will say, in a light rifle, the 280 is going to recoil a bit.

Wouldnt be my rifle of choice for a 6-700 yard shot.

I just wish I wasn't such a crappy shot! It sounds like a 700yd shot on meat is a chip shot for everyone but me. I mean, I shoot steel out to 700yds most weekends and 850yds once a month or so, on a few different bipod'd rifles. It always seems a little different in the hunting field with a light hiking rifle and a 20-30 mph crosswind though.

Seems like if you want to make a habit of this, you need something that has some horsepower, magazine length to accommodate slippery bullets, and weighs 8 lbs +/-. Build a 280AI or 7mag (depending on boltface)on a long action 700, with modest barrel length and contour of 0.625" +/-, and a 25 - 30 oz stock. Or skip the build and buy a SS ADL 30-06 or 7mag and go from there. I'm at just over 8lbs with a 24" SS factory 7mag, DDs and a leupold 6x in a 30 oz McMillan stock. '06 and 7mag throating will both let you kiss lands with slippery stuff and stay within mag confines.

A SWFA 6x will put you a half pound heavier than a leupold 6x, plus whatever difference in mounts. The SWFA 1x4 gets you closer, but is still a few oz heavier. Those obsessed with aiming at thumbtacks on a windless range will always have a problem with the concept of 4x on a western rifle, but those who've lined up on basketball or beachball size targets at those ranges realize that getting a good sight picture way out there really isn't that tough. Some would rather count hairs through their scope vs shoot the animal.

I'd be looking at a M1 on a leupold 4x or 6x to see if you can get repeatability, and if not, go to SWFA and suffer under the weight.

The 280/280AI is a great way to fly,but not on a Montucky,due their relatively trite COAL threshold. The 6-06 is a superior mechanical approach,given those considerations and prolly why I built a 8" Brux contour duped/shortened shank upon a Montucky Twat-Six Donor. Hint.

DD's,6x MQ and a .530BC at 3325fps. Prolly don't suck. Hint.



In the Real World,contending atmospherics matters more than a smidge and impact velocity,is farrrrrrr more important than launch velocity. BC do more than a few nice thangs,doubly so in a fun to shoot parcel. Hint.

Very easy to arrange a .697BC at 2700fps in a Kreedmire. With a 200yd zero,the 1000yd line is 8Mils of windshield away,in this morning's atmosphere. 1125yds is a 10 Mil cursory gawk through the ocular and hardly a big fhuqking deal,as trajectory goes. 5 Mils of 10mph windshield windage correction,in full value conditions,is well beyond the 2000yd line. I realize my error now in not listing a specific bewlit for you. Its obvious a 147 gr 6.5 cal ELDX with its BC of 0.697 pushed at 2700 by the Creed is far superior to a 150 gr 0.284 cal ELDX (BC 0.574) pushed at a sedate 2900 in the plain jane 280. Put both with the same zero, maximum y, or any other retarded combination you care to dream up, the plain jane 280 shoots flatter; the AI version only more so.

As to wind drift, obviously a man of your skilltitude can fully harness the 7" or so of less drift afforded the Creed - at 1000 yards. And of course 7" less wind drift more than compensates for the 14" extra inches or so of drop with your Creed.

Agree. I didn't say I couldn't do it, I'm not comfortable when a living beast is out there. For me, too many things can go wrong when the trigger is tripped. I'll stay inside of 500 and calmish winds.

Shooting ultralight rifles that well is HARD. Anyone who wants to do so had better either have already put in the work to get good that way, or be prepared to put in the work. It will likely take many hundreds of rounds minimum just getting your technique figured out. In particular, horizontal stringing is a bear with ultralights. The cure is a REALLY light trigger and consistent right hand position and trigger pull. The trigger on my Kimber is under a pound pull. Beyond that is just the need to build a good position; the crosshairs should "want" to be on the target, don't be using muscle tension to pull or push the crosshairs onto the bullseye or upon recoil that stored muscle energy will throw a flyer.

Those things are all true with any rifle, but an ultralight will really show you your ass so to speak.

A sub-6 lb .280AI shooting long range bullets (heavies) will be a handful. Just go into it knowing there's likely gonna be some personal work to do. Don't expect things to be real consistent at first.

Edit: 3-9 is PLENTY of X's to get to the OP's max range. I'm about to put a scope with a 10x top end onto a high-end rifle build I intend to shoot out to TWICE the OP's max range. No experience with them but by all accounts the SWFA is a great choice.

Could try and track down a nice slightly used Remington 700KS? Then use the scope of your choice and be off to the races? What ever route you choose that rifle better fit you like a glove. I have a new 6.5 Montana I'm working on, and while it is delivering pretty solid results, it is definitely more work to shoot 5 shot groups well than other heavier hunting rifles I've had, and far more work than dedicated range guns. The trigger is down to 2.75lb from the factory 4.5lb, but I don't imagine I'll go much below that.

I have 3 SWFA's, a 3-15 on my RPR, a fixed 12x on my CTR, and the 3-9 that the OP is asking about, sitting in my safe, but formerly on a M70 EW, all mil/mil. The SWFA's aren't going to match the more expensive scopes for clarity, but they are more than clear enough for most uses, and are very repeatable, which is what's most important if you're twisting turrets. The SWFA's are chunky compared to lighter purpose built hunting scopes, but on the other hand are just under half the weight of a Razor II, all about perspective I guess.

Yeah, the Razor II weighs an even 3 lbs.

I started a post in response to his diatribe on me but declined, have better things to do. Anyone with a ballistics program and 2 minutes can discover the error of his post. Secondly, as you correctly point out, the OP was asking about mountain rifles - not 1000 yard ballistics. Guys get all wrapped up in his BS and insults and miss the fact that he diverts every discussion to shooting 1000 yard paper targets. Strap a backpack on and give it a whirl. Or simply do a day hunt 4-5 miles off Trail. More to mountain hunting than cartridges and rifles. I've got a 257 WBY Ultralight that might be what the OP is looking for.

The thing about Stick is that he has a wealth of knowledge in a limited, specialized area. When one does all their hunting and shooting in a specific locale, without experiencing different climates and hunting techniques, gear and techniques evolve for that specialized area and may not work worth a damn elsewhere.

For example, Stick’s use of H335. The stuff works fine in a climate which varies something like 35 degrees between average winter lows and average summer highs (SE Alaska). In parts of Montana that number changes to around 70-80 degrees difference, and that’s where H335 shows its temperature sensitivity. Nasty stuff, best used for burning ice off sidewalks.

Same thing with advocating the fixed power SWFAs for a mountain rifle. Great scopes, but bulky and have a tendency to not fit well in rifle scabbards. I’ve had the turrets spin while horseback with a scabbard, even with zero stops. So while they may work fine out of a boat, different story on a horseback mountain hunt.

So Stick’s advice should be taken for what it is - good advice for his specific uses, but much of his advice is not real practical for many of us.

That's one reason I think turrets on a general purpose hunting suck. I will take ballistic reticle any day.

I hunt differently and hunt different types of places than Stick, but consider me as one that likes SWFAs on a backpack hunt. I've used them a bunch and haven't had an issue.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like the lower profile, stiffer turrets of the SWFA 3-9 and 10x HD. The larger knobs of the cheaper fixed powers and 3-15 is where myself and several acquaintances have seen issues.

My Kimber MA in 270 w/Leupold 6x36 in Talleys comes in at 6-1....so sweet to handle and carry.

Never had an issue with the fixed powers myself. The turrets spinning unwanted can be mitigated by a simple wrap of electric tape or by using the rubber gasket zero stop. Different strokes I suppose.

Same. Multiple 3-9's and fixed powers have been fine riding on my pack, truck, ATV, etc. With a little preemptive thought and consideration, unwanted turret spinning is an easy problem to fix/prevent.

I’m glad you guys haven’t seen an issue, but I have, as have others, even with the gasket fix. Either way, the scopes still don’t fit well in a saddle scabbard, which may not be an issue for many but it is to me - my backpack rifles are also my everything else rifles. But like Tanner mentioned, different strokes - I was just using those scopes as an example, and the H335 trying to blow up guns in hot conditions (or shooting way off in cold) is probably better at getting my point across about something working in one specific locale but being a poor choice for all around use.

Turret spinning is one thing, but I can definitely understand wanting to go a different direction for scabbard use.

Same here. I shoot a lot of ping pong sorta bullets but can't find much to not like about the SWFA's. The SS directs them pretty well.

To address your recoil comment, I threw in a 7mm-08 shooting a 162 ELD match to even the playing field - 6.5 match bullet against 0.284 match bullet both running at 2700. The 6.5 does crush the 0.284 running similar cartridges - 1.5" on elie, 1.3" on windage at 700 yards.

I'm back to my orignal statement that you took exception to: a good 150/160 0.284 bullet is tough to beat for mountain hunting. Especially if hunting bullets are used.

What is REALLY important here,is muzzle velocity and with it in hand and 15X or better,things really come together on a Pony Safari. Laughing!

A pard was trying to drive through an Alder Jungle on his 4-Wheeler and had a limb catch his rifle,spin him like a fhuqking top,hook the sling,catapult said rifle off and forward...to be timed perfectly,so his now unmanned vehicle could drive over same. It put a nice bend in the erector spindle,but the turret stayed index to "0" and POA/POI didn't change. Funny to watch him whirl Bent Knob,but erector travel/integrity is not affected. Prolly weren't a Reupold(grin). Gotsta LOVE Fixed Fhuqker rugged reliability.

Yeah, turrets spinning accidentally isn't an issue I struggle with, in any scenario. But those low-profile turrets and the sleek scope certainly look a bit more scabbard-friendly than the SS fixed power scopes. Of course, the fixed power SS scopes could work just fine in a scabbard, while maybe not ideal for the application, especially if a guy has a way of making himself a custom scabbard to accommodate the larger turrets

Back to the OP's question... I doubt there's one answer that fits everybody, and this is conjecture and extrapolation on my part, but I've got high hopes that my Kimber 8400, currently a great 7 WSM, will be even better as a mid- to long-range mountain backpack rifle as a 6.5 SAUM. "Same" ballistics in the ways that matter and a nice step down in recoil. Now that I own the reamer, I suspect that'll happen down the road. I just chambered the rifle I bought it for- a little heavier build than a Mountain Rifle or Kimber- this weekend... pretty excited to play with it this spring.

I'll throw out there that a mere mortal might could even stand to buck up and carry a rifle a bit heavier than the Kimbers and Mountains of the world.... if he's truly intending it for mid to long range. Just a little extra heft goes a long ways when it comes to repeatable precision shooting. And for the love of all that is Holy, set that trigger crisp and LIGHT and don't look back!

PS- Larry, a guy recommending 45-degreee scope rolls shouldn't cast stones about scrambled eggs. Just sayin'.
