I have an old issue of Shooting Times around here somewhere where Layne Simpson did an exhaustive test of .308 bullets and powders and determined that the 165 grain bullet was the absolute best choice from the .308 cartridge. My biggest buck fell to a .308 165 grain Hornady 165 grain Interlock and while he ran 50 yards, I had blood within several yards of where he stood. I started a thread once of what bullets people had stopped in deer and a lot of guys mentioned the 150's from .308's and .30-06's. I personally never want to stop a bullet in an animal and not get complete penetration. Our deer camp never lost a deer hit anywhere with a 180 grain round nose Core-Lokt and believe me, our guys hit deer "anywhere". That was the Benoit tracking guys bullet of choice too early on.
