The several stories about standard loads just poking through are unsettling and I suspect the problem would be exacerbated by lower velocities from a 16-in. bbl.

I kill Florida and Georgia Whitetails dead as you would want, with a Marlin 336Y Spikehorn. That is a 16 inch barrel, and I use 170 grain handloads. Never had a deer walk away from a solid hit.
If the .30-30 were a poor deer cartridge, it would have died out years ago. Just saying..........
