I have taken some 400-pound animals with it and it penetrates pretty darn well! I am also a big fan of the .250 Savage, and like you (and Larry Koller) have never found it lacking on whitetails (or pronghorns or mule deer), though I've never taken any animals much past 200 yards with it.
