I don't know about the Varmint model, but the 453 American is pretty loosey-goosey in the action screw department. When I got mine, the barrel would bounce against the forend when I shook the rifle a bit. I shimmed it just behind the forend tip with a piece of clear plastic. Shoots good with ammo it likes.
