If it isn’t cooked with mesquite on a seasoned pit, it ain’t cshit! This is what a real pit looks like, built this not long ago.

What does it cost nowadays to build one like that?

It would take 1500.00 in plate, pipe, wheels, hinges etc, plus labor. It would kill 60 hours to build and paint it. It takes time to go gather up the parts. Anything metal has skyrocketed since the Commie 19 hit. A 4x8 sheet of 1/4 plate is 300.00. People won’t pay what it costs for a pit like that. They wouldn’t pay what the parts cost, much less labor too. Welding rods, grinding wheels are expensive now too.
I made them, did a football pot, was the only way I could make any money at all on building a pit. When they let us start working OT, quit the pit building business, much easier work.
Thats what I was thinking, about 3-4 grand. I'm just going to weld a new firebox on mine.

It would take 4000.00 to get me to build one like that now. Gasses for cutting torch and rods are out of sight too.
I have a 250-gallon propane tank I want to make one out of someday.

I’ve got 2 propane tanks. One big and one small. The smaller one I want to make upright on the front of the pit. It’s on my list, just not at the top….too many projects.

Yes, and I've been there with friends who were hollering, "Build me one !!".

They say that until you tell them how much the material will be! I’ve built a dozen with firebox underneath

There are three kinds of BBQ, good, better, and best.

What is west Kentucky style?

I lived in TN for almost ten years and never heard of west Kentucky style?

Maybe you should have gotten out on TN more often....lol

OK, but please elaborate.
Pork shoulder cooked with hickory wood, usually about 16 hours, then pulled and served with sauce on the side if wanted. It’s pretty much the same thing you’d find all the way down towards Nashville and over into West Tennessee. Personally I like what’s cooked here locally better than anywhere else

OK, that's why I've never heard of its distinction as a style.

Around early 2000's I duck hunted a fair amount in western Kentucky for a few seasons, I know I ate some bbq several times. Didn't remember anything specific.

Well, I'm going to haul that propane tank to my buddy Paris's "welder" casa this weekend so I can use one of his welding rigs to build it, now I need to find a small trailer to build it on.

Lol...any BBQ but Texas's is still good.

But it's not BBQ.

Kinda like that "chili" that someone posted with navy beans and broccoli.

I'm old enough to remember when BBQ was made in the ground. It was only done on special occasions, such as a family reunion.

The menfolk stayed up all night burning wood in a huge hole and doing whatever they were doing. (Damn, I wish I was old enough to have been privy to that.) They would put a layer of dirt over the coals and chunk a whole steer, seasoned and wrapped in paper on top and cover it with something until the next afternoon. I can't remember what they covered the hole with. Then they would put the meat in huge pots with sauce. I was too young to consider many details, but it was a huge event.

We didn't eat beef accept for special occasions...they were money.

Had a cole slaw rating contest at my house last night. Blind draw out of 4 different styles, 1 sample from Dickies BBQ, 2 samples from local deli's, 1 with bagged shredded cabbage with a homemade Tik Tok recipe.

Home made won the contest.

We're feeding 150-200 people pit roasted pulled pork with cole slaw on the side and a bunch of other side dishes at my wife's memorial party next month.
