My experience has been that on small targets, a 223 reaches as far as I can effectively lay down fire, and that's around 400 yards.
He's a much better shot than me, regularly participating in Precision Rifle events, etc.
I'm only taking a 17 HMR and a 223 AR.
If he shoots competitions, why not bring the match rifle? When I specifically target long range rock chucks I take whatever setup I've been competing with that year.
