A knife in a pack or attached to a pack can get separated from its user. I wear mine on my belt.
Backup blades are in kydex sheathes in the pack.
I really like Dozier's kydex sheaths, both the horizontal and the Wilderness styles.
Baldrick lanyards work well, especially when the knife has a fire kit.
