Under 5 lbs., I prefer the .17 HMR.

Over 5 lbs., I prefer the .22 Mag.

I shoot called 'cats at close range, sometimes as little as 10', with a Remington 597 in .22 Mag. I don't know if I'd do the same with the .17 HMR.
