This whole high mount trend seem to be modern. In times past hunting rifles, shotguns, and military rifles, had in common an orientation toward quick offhand shooting. Of course much of it has to do with accommodating optics, but how high is enough?

The use of the attached bi-pod seems it would require the high scope mount and resulting cheek rest for a shooter in the prone position in full battle gear.
