The desire to serve Lucifer and be his minion purveying misery, sadness, pain, fear and death among fellow human beings to slap GODs face adds another dimension.
Self interest, greed, extreme wealth and power is self sustaining and self serving. Many, if not most, who are in that position probably don't think in terms of God or Lucifer. Stratified society developed in cultures with diverse religious beliefs, many who had never heard of the God of the bible.
