As street cop in the '80s my only authorized off-duty (and back up) gun was a "Chief".
On foot patrol In warm weather without a jacket, the only practical way to carry the 36 was on the ankle. Not good.
Off-duty, not good either - no one walked around with an untucked shirt in those days.
