If you can easily see the smoke, go somewhere they know what they're doing unless you like the taste of ashtray.
There was a time when I had been to practically every bbq joint in SC. The best places live and die by the cooks. Cook retires or ownership changes and there it went. The best I knew are closed or changed hands.
When we visit SC we hit Maurice's. It's probably not the best but it is consistently pretty good. Be sure to get the hash & rice. Big Ts in Columbia has better hash but everything else not so much.
No comment on NC. I'm sure people who grew up eating that thinks it's the best.
And FYI. Sticky Fingers ranks with Shane's Rib Shack and Sonny's. They all suck.
