That was a called play because SF was done giving them the sidelines. And 15 yards gained is a huge difference betwixed an actual play vs. a Hail Mary.
Teams practice the hell out of those sorts of plays and they know exactly how much time they need to get the ball spiked.

Detail 1: Tell the official what you're going to do so he's on his horse.
Detail 2: Run to a certain spot (yardline) so the entire offense has a target on where they need to end up to spike the ball. (Dak ran too far for his own good)
Detail 3: Don't hand the ball to the center - hand it to official and make sure the lineman GTF out of his way so he can spot the ball.

The devil is in the details. Lack of detail and discipline is a hallmark of a McCarthy-coached team.



Yep. #3 alone could've given him enough time to spike the ball. Aikman said it on the broadcast: "Dak didn't understand that the official has to spot the ball."
