This story isn't different from politics today.
People see a way to live in a way that *sounds* good, but don't seem to understand that there are serious compromises involved in trying to live in a way that reality doesn't favor. Then when they are in it, they either see how FU it is and how much gaslighting it takes to keep it going or they are just too damn stupid to figure it out like today's Democrats.
By Democrats or perverts, about 1/2 the population is too stupid to figure out they're getting screwed.
