In the US, a battalion commander is a LtCol, a regiment/brigade commander is a Col. A division commander is a 1 or 2 star. A logistics element would be commanded by a 1 star. A task force could be commanded by a 1 star. What do you think they do, lead over skype? The combat operations center for an invading force is going to be in proximity to the front, and will move with the bulk of the unit. If the unit is having problems, the commanding officers including 1 and 2 stars are going to have to inspect the unit and direct movements. The more jacked up, the more the involvement. The Russian invasion is a calamity. Their logistics problems cannot be explained except by ineptitude of the highest level. Individual generals that are competent must be frustrated beyond belief and will need to make sure their units are functioning as they intend. Therefore, it is completely understandable why they are taking casualties among general officers.
