As I mentioned earlier in this thread, my only .308 (the only one I've ever had) is a Ruger 1B. A guy called me up one night, offered it for a great price, I'd always wanted a No. 1 but would have preferred some other cartridge. Anyway, I've played around with it, got it shooting pretty well, killed some deer with it... Several years back Remington was making what they called a Compact Tactical Rife on their Extreme Conditions Rifle version of the 700. It was made in .223 and .308. I got one in .223, B&C stock, aluminum bedding block, fluted 20" heavy 9 twist barrel, etc. I put a VariXIII 1.75 - 6 on it with a green anodized w/black splatter from the Leupold custom shop to match the B&C stock...it's been a great rifle and shoots lights out. I sort of regret that at some point I didn't get a matching one in .308.
