It is entirely possible to have those conversations without invective. I'd go so far as to say that hateful racist language is a barrier to addressing the elephant in the room.
That's BS and you know it. I would get shouted down as racist no matter how I presented the FBI crime statistics in any public venue.
Not being allowed to discuss the obvious issue without being called racist makes people stop GAF and actually leads to more animosity.
