Before I learned to twist a dial I used the junction of the thick and thin parts of my duplex for an aiming point and on my 7mm RM rifle at the time with a 250 zero that was right on at 400 yards.
Was still pretty easy to shoot to 500.

Now I have to many chamberings, loads, rifles and scopes to remember WTF which dot is which on BDC style reticles. So I just dial. If I don't have time I'll just wing it or not shoot, whatever feels right at the moment.
